KISHTWAR: In a significant and innovative move to merge environmental sustainability with electoral awareness, District Election Officer, Rajesh Kumar Shavan today Kick started  the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" initiative in the district by planting an indigenous tree species  here at the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) Kishtwar.

This initiative is part of a broader campaign launched by the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and Forest Department, aimed at honoring the nurturing role of mothers through dedicated tree plantation.

The drive was launched in conjunction with the ongoing Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign  to remind citizens of their dual responsibility–towards both the environment and the democratic process amid the Assembly Elections 2024.

"Planting a tree for our mothers is a beautiful way to honor their contribution, just as casting a vote is a vital way to contribute to our democracy"  said Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Kumar Shavan at the launch of the drive. He emphasized the critical importance of tree plantation as a means to enhance the green cover and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment. He noted that trees are essential to the ecological balance, serving as the 'green gold' that supports life on Earth.

The DC also pointed out that the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" initiative not only honors mothers but also fosters a sense of responsibility towards environmental stewardship among the citizens.

With the Assembly Elections 2024 underway, and the first phase of polling in Kishtwar scheduled for September 18, the SVEEP campaign has gained additional momentum. The campaign is focused on encouraging maximum voter turnout, ensuring that every eligible citizen exercises his right to vote, thereby strengthening the democratic process.

Rajesh Kumar Shavan highlighted the significance of the electoral process in a democratic setup and urged all eligible voters in the district to participate actively in the upcoming elections. He stressed that voting is a fundamental democratic right and responsibility, and every vote contributes to the overall success of the democratic system.

The plantation ceremony also witnessed the participation of several key officials, including PO ICDS Dr. Rishi Kumar, ACD Kishtwar Phulail Singh, SVEEP Nodal Officer Kuldeep Kumar and officials of Forest department, KDA among others.
