JAMMU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raman Suri today welcomed the latest assessment of the security situation in Jammu Kashmir, saying that the figures comparing 2018 with 2025 provide compelling evidence of the Union Territory’s (UT) massive transformation from an era of street violence and terrorism towards peace, stability and development.
Referring to the figures highlighted by the NITI Aayog, Suri said that incidents of stone-pelting have witnessed a remarkable 98.6 per cent decline, falling from 1,767 incidents in 2018 to just 25 in 2025. He said the decline in violence is equally visible on other important security parameters. Terror-related incidents and encounters reportedly declined from 189 in 2018 to 33 in 2025, an 82.5 per cent reduction, while the number of terrorists killed fell from 257 to 34, registering an 87 per cent decline.
Suri said the sacrifice of security personnel has also reduced substantially, with fatalities declining from 91 in 2018 to 16 in 2025, an 82.4 per cent fall. Civilian deaths in terror incidents also declined from 55 to 28, a reduction of around 49.1 per cent. “These are not merely statistics; they represent the changing ground reality of Jammu Kashmir. The disappearance of stone-pelting and the sharp decline in terror incidents demonstrate that the ecosystem of violence has been decisively weakened,” Suri said.
He also pointed to the decline in ceasefire violations, which came down from 382 in 2018 to 193 in 2025, representing a reduction of approximately 49.5 per cent. Suri said the figures demonstrate the effectiveness of sustained security operations, stronger intelligence coordination and the government’s approach of combining security with development and greater opportunities for the youth.
He, however, stressed that the remaining challenges must not be ignored, particularly attempts to revive terror-support networks and recruit vulnerable youth. “The goal must now be to ensure that no young person is pushed towards the path of violence, no family loses a member to terrorism and no street in JK ever returns to the days of stone-pelting and fear. Peace must become irreversible,” he said.
Suri credited the security forces, police, intelligence agencies and the people of Jammu Kashmir for the transformation, saying that their collective efforts have created an environment in which peace, tourism, investment and development can flourish. “The numbers tell a powerful story of change. Jammu Kashmir is moving from headlines of violence to headlines of progress,” he added.
