POONCH: Under the motto 'Save Girl Child', the NSS units of SKC Government Degree College Poonch organised a series of activities under the patronage of Principal Dr Jasbir Singh. The first activity of the day was a lecture on women empowerment delivered by Associate Professor of Zoology Dr Shamim Ahmed Bandey.

Dr Bandey emphasised the importance of gender equality, women’s education, financial independence and equal opportunities in all fields. He shared real-life examples to motivate volunteers to promote women’s rights and dignity in society. He also highlighted various government schemes and legal provisions aimed at empowering women. The volunteers actively participated and asked thoughtful questions.

The second activity was an awareness lecture on female foeticide delivered by Dr Loveleen Kaur Kesar. She focused on the declining sex ratio and the serious consequences of gender discrimination.

She also discussed the legal aspects of the PCPNDT Act to make students aware of the punishable nature of this crime. The volunteers took a pledge to spread awareness in their adopted villages and encourage respect and equality for the girl child.

The third activity was a poster-making competition organised on the themes 'Save Girl Child' and 'Women Empowerment' to encourage creativity and awareness. The volunteers prepared attractive posters with powerful slogans and messages promoting gender equality.

This activity helped students express their thoughts artistically while spreading social awareness. Additionally, an awareness rally was organised in the community area. The volunteers marched with posters and raised slogans such as 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao', 'Stop Female Foeticide' and 'Equal Rights for Women'. The rally aimed to sensitise the local community about the importance of protecting and educating the girl child.
