In loving memory of Dr. Priya Ranjan: A mentor who treated me like family

SRINAGAR: The Department of Microbiology, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, celebrated Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week under the theme “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” The programme, organised under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Iffat Hassan , Principal and Dean, GMC Srinagar, featured a series of academic and awareness‑ oriented activities aimed at promoting responsible antimicrobial use.

Prof. Dr. Iffat Hassan appreciated the Microbiology department for its initiative and stressed the need for strong antimicrobial policies in hospitals. She called for routine antibiogram updates, strict monitoring of prescription patterns, and the establishment of structured stewardship teams in every clinical unit, urging students to integrate laboratory data into clinical decisions and reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure.

Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Asifa Nazir, highlighted the urgent need for correct antimicrobial use, accurate diagnostics, strict infection control, and rational prescribing. She emphasized responsible laboratory practices, regular surveillance of resistance patterns, and urged students to understand MIC values, follow hospital guidelines, and identify high‑risk organisms early.

The week included sessions on antimicrobial stewardship, infection‑prevention tools, rapid diagnostics, emerging resistance trends, and quality assurance.  Students participated in poster presentations, a quiz competition for UG and MD students, and case‑based discussions on multidrug‑resistant pathogens, antibiogram interpretation, and point‑of‑care diagnostic tools. The Department of Microbiology reaffirmed its commitment to disciplined training, precise laboratory work, and responsible antimicrobial practices.
