JAMMU: The Department of Commerce, University of Jammu, organised an insightful and interactive lecture on “Financial Literacy” today. The programme was organised under the leadership and guidance of Prof. Jeevan Jyoti, Head, Department of Commerce, for students of M.Com. I Semester and M.Com. III Semester (Finance Group). The lecture aimed to enhance students’ understanding of financial planning, investment opportunities, risk management and long-term wealth creation.
Prof. Pawan Kumar Gupta (Retd.), SEBI-SMART, was the resource person for the session. A distinguished financial market professional and educator, Prof. Gupta has 26 years of teaching experience and 35 years of active involvement in stock market operations.
Addressing the students, Prof. Gupta shared valuable practical insights into the fundamentals of personal financial management, investment planning and the functioning of financial markets. He emphasized the importance of making informed and disciplined financial decisions at an early stage of life and explained how sound financial planning can contribute to long-term financial stability and wealth creation.
A major focus of the lecture was the distinction between saving and investing. Prof. Gupta explained that while saving provides financial security and liquidity, money kept idle over a long period may lose its purchasing power due to inflation. He encouraged students to adopt a disciplined approach to investment and explore suitable investment avenues, including Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) and equity markets, while carefully considering risk, return and investment horizon.
He also highlighted the importance of understanding financial products and market mechanisms before making investment decisions. The interactive nature of the session enabled students to connect concepts covered in their academic curriculum with real-world financial practices and investment decisions. The lecture also provided an opportunity for students to seek clarification on various aspects of personal finance, investment and financial markets.
The programme was coordinated by Prof. Tarsem Lal and Dr. Harleen. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks, wherein sincere gratitude was expressed to Prof. Pawan Kumar Gupta for sharing his valuable knowledge and extensive practical experience with the students. The organisers also conveyed their appreciation to Prof. Jeevan Jyoti, Head, Department of Commerce, for his guidance and support in facilitating the successful organization of the lecture.
The lecture served as a meaningful academic initiative towards equipping students with essential financial knowledge and fostering a culture of informed, responsible and disciplined financial decision-making.
