JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Management Jammu inaugurated thefifth batch of Mid-Career Leadership Development Training Programme for Young Managers of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), reaffirming its commitment to strengthening industry leadership through executive education.
The five-day programme brings together young managers from diverse operational units of SAIL for an intensive learning experience focused on managerial competencies, strategic thinking, peer learning, and industryāacademia collaboration.The training programme consisted of 48 participants from SAIL plants across India.
The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean, Faculty & Research, and Program Director IIM Jammu, Dr. Atanu Mukherjee, General Manager Academic, Central HRD & Senior Faculty, Management Training Institute (MTI), SAIL graced the occasionin online mode. Dr. Ashish Kumar, Co-Chairperson, Executive Education and Consultancy, IIM Jammu, and Prof. Ramswarup Bhaskar, Programme Director, IIM Jammu also graced the inaugural ceremony.
Addressing the participants, Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Faculty and Research emphasized that the programme has been carefully curated to prepare young managers for higher managerial responsibilities and strategic decision-making. He highlighted that the learning journey extends beyond classroom sessions through assignments, projects, and advanced learning modules aimed at developing holistic managerial capabilities.
Encouraging participants to make the most of the opportunity, he remarked that stepping away from their regular workplace allows them to unlearn, relearn, collaborate with peers, and co-create knowledge. He urged them to actively engage in discussions, exchange ideas, and embrace innovative approaches that would enable them to contribute to taking SAIL to greater heights.
He further noted that the experience would not only enhance their professional competence but also transform their perspective as future leaders.The participants introduced themselves during an interactive session, sharing their professional backgrounds and expectations from the programme, setting the stage for collaborative learning throughout the five-day training.
In his address online, Dr. Atanu Mukherjee, General Manager Academic, Central HRD & Senior Faculty, Management Training Institute (MTI), SAIL highlighted that the programme has been designed around eight core managerial competencies essential for emerging leaders.
He encouraged participants to approach the programme with openness and commitment, learning not only from the distinguished faculty but also from the rich experiences of fellow participants representing diverse operational environments. Stressing the importance of action-oriented learning, he underlined the significance of Action Learning Projects in generating measurable organizational value and return on investment.
He also encouraged participants to contribute towards developing industry case studies based on real-life challenges, which could serve as valuable knowledge resources. Further, he emphasized the responsibility of young managers to mentor junior colleagues, strengthen leadership at multiple organizational levels, and apply their learning to drive meaningful organizational transformation. He wished all participants a rewarding and enriching learning experience.
Dr. Ashish Kumar, Co-Chairperson, Executive Education and Consultancy and Programme Director, IIM Jammu, welcomed the participants and provided an overview of the Mid-Career Leadership Development Training Programme.
He emphasized the importance of learning from both faculty and peers, fostering collaboration, building professional networks, and moving beyond departmental silos to contribute effectively towards SAIL's organizational vision.
Encouraging participants to remain open-minded and actively engage throughout the programme, he also highlighted IIM Jammu's remarkable growth in executive education and consultancy, and flagship initiatives such as Project YUVA and MSME capacity-building programmes, reflecting the Institute's commitment to industry engagement and leadership development.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Ramswarup Bhaskar, Programme Director, IIM Jammu, who expressed gratitude to the SAIL Management, IIM Jammu Leadership, distinguished guests, faculty members, and participants for their enthusiastic participation and conveyed his confidence that the programme would provide a transformative learning experience for all.
