DODA: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Doda, under the administrative control of SKUAST-Jammu, on Friday organized an Awareness-cum-Training Programme under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan here at Village Hallian- Bhaderwah.
The Department of Agriculture also collaborated in organizing the event held under the leadership of Vice Chancellor SKUAST-Jammu Dr. B. N. Tripathi and the guidance of Director Extension, SKUAST-Jammu Dr. Amrish Vaid. More than 30 farmers, farm women and rural youth participated enthusiastically in the programme.
Chief Scientist and Head KVK Dr. Amit Singh Charak highlighted the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, a nationwide awareness and capacity-building campaign launched jointly by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India. He emphasized the importance of balanced fertilizer application, soil testing-based nutrient management, judicious use of urea and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices for maintaining soil health, enhancing productivity and conserving natural resources.
Scientist (Agricultural Extension) Dr. Arvinder Kumar informed the participants about the campaign’s focus on strengthening farmer outreach through timely advisories, effective dissemination of scientific technologies and awareness regarding government welfare schemes. He also stressed the role of natural farming in conserving biodiversity, protecting the environment, reducing cultivation costs and ensuring food and nutritional security.
During the programme, experts from KVK Doda and the Department of Agriculture interacted with farmers and discussed various aspects of soil health management, integrated nutrient management, climate-resilient agriculture and natural farming practices. Farmers were also sensitized about the adverse effects of indiscriminate fertilizer use and the need to maintain soil fertility for sustainable crop production.
Participants were briefed about the government-sponsored schemes, including HADP, PM-KISAN, JKCIP and other agricultural development programmes and were encouraged to avail themselves of the benefits offered under these initiatives.
The programme concluded with an interactive session during which farmers raised queries related to crop production, soil health and government schemes. The queries were satisfactorily addressed by the experts. The participants appreciated the efforts of KVK Doda in organizing such awareness programmes for the welfare and empowerment of the farming community.
