  • Director, Registrar highlight role of youth in nation-building

SRINAGAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar organized the “Run for Swadeshi” on Monday to commemorate the 164th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, observed nationwide as National Youth Day. Despite the ongoing winter vacation, the campus came alive with enthusiasm as participants gathered to promote the values of Swadeshi, Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and national unity.

The event was graced by Prof. Roohie Naaz Mir, Director (In-Charge), NIT Srinagar, who served as the Chief Guest. In her address, she highlighted the relevance of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings in the contemporary era and urged the youth to adopt lifestyles that support indigenous industries while prioritising physical fitness.

The programme was organised by the NSS, NCC and Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) Cell of the institute under the coordinatorship of Dr. Tawseef Ayoub Sheikh, who ensured the smooth execution of the run and the accompanying ceremony. Director, NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, in his message, said that observing National Youth Day through such initiatives helps translate the ideals of Swami Vivekananda into action.

He stressed that the youth are the backbone of the nation and must actively contribute to strengthening India’s economic and cultural foundations. “The ‘Run for Swadeshi’ is not merely symbolic. Every consumer choice impacts the nation’s growth, and supporting indigenous products directly contributes to building a self-reliant India,” Prof. Kanaujia said.

He added that Swami Vivekananda’s teachings continue to inspire confidence, discipline and a strong sense of national responsibility among the youth. He further said the initiative combined physical fitness with social awareness, noting that a healthy body and mind are essential for nation-building. Registrar, NIT Srinagar, Prof. Atikur Rehman, said educational institutions play a vital role in nurturing socially responsible citizens.

He said promoting Swadeshi is not limited to economic growth but also helps preserve national identity and values. Speaking on the sidelines, NSS Coordinator Dr Pramod Kumar Yadav expressed gratitude to the institute administration and participants for making the event a success despite the freezing winter conditions.

He said the strong participation showed the enthusiasm of youth for national causes and added that such activities help promote discipline, teamwork, and a sense of social responsibility among students. Assistant Security Officer Mushtaq Ahmed Bhatt ensured security arrangements and smooth conduct of the run along the designated route, officials said.

The run witnessed spirited participation from PhD scholars currently on campus. Prominent participants included Adnan Rasheed Sheikh, Furqan Yaqub Khan, Sahil Yaseen, Gouhar Yousuf, Farhan Ahmad, Mudasir Shabir, Munzir and Inaam, whose involvement reflected a strong blend of academic commitment and civic responsibility. Representing the student body and the NSS unit, Tabinda Bashir and Aliza Mumtaz played a key role in mobilising participants and energising the event.

The programme also saw community participation, with Aamina Mubashir joining from outside the institute, symbolising the growing bond between the institution and the local community. The “Run for Swadeshi” concluded with a pledge reaffirming commitment to national unity and physical well-being.
