JAMMU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raman Suri has strongly appealed to the Jammu Kashmir government to immediately regulate and streamline power supply in a manner that ensures uninterrupted electricity to the people, especially during the ongoing harsh winter conditions. He also asked the government to also make arrangements for the poor and helpless who are sleeping on roads in these harsh winter conditions.

Raman Suri said that the meteorological department has already predicted an extremely severe winter, and in such circumstances, it becomes the bounden duty of the government to act with sensitivity, preparedness and urgency. He expressed deep concern over the plight of poor, beggars and mentally challenged persons who are being forced to sleep on roads, pavements and in makeshift arrangements, calling the situation “shocking, inhuman and unacceptable.”

He said that despite the existence of Rain-Baseras, particularly at the Bagh-e-Bahu area, many needy people are either unable to reach these facilities or are not being properly relocated and accommodated. “The purpose of Rain-Baseras stands defeated if the most vulnerable sections of society are left to fend for themselves in biting cold,” Suri said. Moreover, many can’t be dislocated from their localities so arrangements will have to be made there itself.

Raman Suri further appealed to the Indian Red Cross Society, stating that it is a large and resourceful humanitarian organisation which must step forward in this hour of need. He specifically urged the Red Cross Society to open one of its halls at the Red Cross Building in Kachi Chawni and make adequate heating arrangements, including heaters, blankets and basic amenities, for the poor and underprivileged.

“The Red Cross Society should accommodate as many homeless people as possible so that those currently sleeping on roads and in open spaces are provided safe shelter during this harsh winter,” he said, adding that coordinated efforts between the administration, civic bodies and voluntary organisations are urgently required.

Clubbing the issue of power supply with winter preparedness, Raman Suri came down heavily on the government for what he termed gross mismanagement and lack of concern towards common people. He said that the government has been doing absolute injustice to the people by failing to provide uninterrupted electricity, even during festivals.

“Many localities were forced to celebrate Lohri without electricity, which reflects sheer administrative failure. Power cuts during peak winter nights and festive occasions are not just inconvenience but a serious threat to life, especially for elderly, children and patients,” he said.

Raman Suri demanded that the government immediately review its power distribution mechanism, ensure adequate supply, and put in place foolproof arrangements so that people do not suffer due to outages in sub-zero temperatures.

He asserted that governance is about empathy and accountability, and urged the administration to rise above routine excuses and take swift, concrete and humane action to protect lives and dignity during the ongoing winter crisis.
