JAMMU: Two students from the University of Jammu have been selected to participate in the Lok Sabha Secretariat’s prestigious national-level ‘Know Your Leader’ programme, scheduled to be held at the Parliament of India on October 31, 2026, to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Ms. Anshika Gandhi of The Law School and Mr. Narayan Choudhary of the University’s Design Your Degree (DYD) programme will represent the University at the national event, which brings together young participants from across the country to pay tribute to India’s national leaders and gain firsthand exposure to the country’s democratic institutions.

Congratulating the selected students, University of Jammu Vice-Chancellor Prof. Umesh Rai described their selection as a matter of pride for the institution, saying it reflected the potential of its students to participate in and make their presence felt at prestigious national-level platforms.

Prof. Rai underscored the responsibility of educational institutions to go beyond academic instruction and prepare young people to become informed, responsible and active citizens. He said initiatives such as ‘Know Your Leader’ provide students with valuable opportunities to understand the lives, contributions and ideals of distinguished national leaders who played a pivotal role in shaping the country.

Advising the students to make the most of the opportunity, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged them to develop a deeper understanding of India’s democratic traditions, constitutional values and parliamentary institutions. He also urged them to draw inspiration from the life and ideals of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, particularly his commitment to national unity, integrity and public service.

Prof. Rai expressed hope that the students would share their experiences and learnings with their fellow students upon returning to the university, allowing the wider student community to benefit from their participation in the national initiative.

Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Registrar; Prof. Prakash C. Antahal, Dean Students Welfare; Prof. Manju Jamwal, Director of The Law School; Prof. Alka Sharma, Director of the SIIEDC; and Prof. Monika Chadha, Chairperson of the Campus Cultural Committee, were also present on the occasion.

The university officials congratulated the selected students and highlighted the importance of such opportunities in broadening students’ perspectives, strengthening their leadership capabilities and fostering greater awareness of the country’s national institutions.

The programme, titled ‘Know Your Leader – Participation of Youth of the Country in Paying Homage to Our National Leaders on their Birth Anniversary’, is scheduled for October 31, 2026, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The initiative will provide young participants from across India with an opportunity to visit the Parliament of India, engage directly with the country’s democratic institutions and pay floral tributes to national leaders inside the historic Central Hall of Parliament.

Communicated through the State University Bureau of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the initiative seeks to connect young people with the legacy of India’s national leaders and deepen their understanding of the contributions these leaders made to the nation, its democratic institutions and public life.

The selection of the two students underscores the University of Jammu’s continued commitment to encouraging student participation in national-level initiatives that promote leadership, civic responsibility, constitutional awareness and a deeper appreciation of India’s democratic heritage.
