• Awareness drives, enforcement operations & community outreach scaled up

HANDWARA & AWANTIPORA: In a major crackdown and awareness initiative against the growing drug menace, Police in Handwara & Awantipora have intensified anti-narcotics operations under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, launching a comprehensive campaign focused on awareness, enforcement, community participation and preventive action across multiple areas.

In Handwara, extensive awareness programmes and rallies were organized in schools and public places to educate students and youth about the devastating effects of drug addiction on health, families and society. During interactive sessions, students were encouraged to stay away from narcotics, adopt healthy lifestyles and act as ambassadors in the fight against drugs, emphasizing that the youth are the true strength and future of society.

Simultaneously, police teams carried out intensified checking at identified drug hotspots, enhanced surveillance and established naka points at strategic locations to monitor suspicious movement and curb illegal narcotics activities. The operations were aimed at dismantling the drug ecosystem and preventing the spread of drugs among vulnerable sections, particularly the youth.

Special inspection drives were also conducted at medical shops across various areas to ensure strict compliance with legal guidelines governing the sale of prescription medicines. Shopkeepers were sensitized regarding mandatory record maintenance and adherence to SOPs to prevent misuse of pharmaceutical drugs.

In another significant step under the anti-narcotics campaign, police destroyed wild cannabis cultivation found at various locations and appealed to the public to immediately report any illegal cultivation or drug-related activity in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, in Awantipora, Police organized multiple awareness programmes at Government High School Dogripora, Government Higher Secondary School Panzgam, Government High School Wuyan and CFC Hall at BDO Office Aripal. Participants were sensitized about the harmful consequences of drug abuse and encouraged to actively contribute towards building a drug-free society.

A signature campaign was also organized at Bus Stand Tral in collaboration with the District Drug De-Addiction & Rehabilitation Centre Pulwama, where members of the public pledged support towards eradicating drug abuse from society.

Further intensifying enforcement measures, joint inspections of medical stores were conducted by Police and the Drug Department at Gulzarpora and Panzgam. During the inspections, two medical shops viz Shafi Medical Store and Irshad Medical Store were sealed by the Drug Department Pulwama for violations of prescribed norms and regulations.

Additionally, under the ongoing campaign, Police in Khrew conducted a special drive against violations of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), during which several violators were fined on the spot for breaching provisions of the Act.

Reiterating their firm commitment towards eradicating the drug menace, J&K Police appealed to citizens, parents, teachers, religious leaders and civil society members to actively support the mission and work collectively towards a drug-free Jammu & Kashmir.
