BARAMULLA: In a decisive move to strengthen telecom security and curb potential misuse of mobile connectivity, Police in Baramulla carried out a surprise inspection of SIM card vendors operating within the jurisdiction of Police Station Tangmarg.

The unannounced operation aimed to verify strict adherence to the mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) norms and ensure full compliance with Department of Telecommunications (DoT) guidelines. Checking teams thoroughly examined vendor records, customer documentation, and other related credentials to detect any procedural lapses.

During the inspection, while several vendors were found operating within legal norms, certain discrepancies came to light — including instances of SIM cards being issued without valid or complete identification. Consequently, questionable SIM cards and related documents were seized, and vendors found violating the norms were booked under relevant legal provisions. Additionally, warnings were issued to those with minor procedural irregularities.

This drive reflects the commitment of Baramulla Police to safeguard communication networks and prevent any misuse of telecom facilities by criminal or anti-social elements. Authorities have emphasized that such inspections will be conducted routinely and without prior notice to ensure continued compliance.

J&K Police urges citizens to remain vigilant and obtain SIM cards only through authorized and verified channels, while cautioning vendors to maintain strict procedural compliance or face stern legal action.
