JAMMU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raman Suri today said that an initiative taken by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Vijaypur, to invite doctors from Jammu and Kashmir who have pursued medical education or professional careers abroad to return and serve their motherland will boost healthcare system here in Jammu. He termed the move as “commendable, timely, and deeply rooted in the spirit of nation-building.”

In a statement issued here today, Raman Suri said that this initiative will significantly strengthen the healthcare delivery system in Jammu Kashmir and simultaneously provide young and budding doctors an invaluable opportunity to learn from globally experienced medical professionals. “Jammu Kashmir has produced thousands of highly qualified doctors who were forced to migrate abroad due to lack of adequate employment opportunities or limited medical infrastructure at home. Today, many of them have established themselves internationally and earned immense recognition,” he said.

Suri emphasized that these doctors also share a moral responsibility towards the land and institutions that shaped their careers. “The medical colleges and institutions of Jammu Kashmir played a crucial role in their education. Giving back to society, especially in the field of healthcare, is not just an obligation but a service to humanity,” he added.

While acknowledging that the healthcare system in the Union Territory has witnessed notable improvements over the past few years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Raman Suri pointed out that the ground reality still demands focused attention. “There is hardly any district in Jammu Kashmir that does not face a shortage of specialist doctors. The situation is particularly concerning in government hospitals, where specialist services remain inadequate,” he said.

Referring to AIIMS Vijaypur, Suri said that the institution has raised high expectations among the people since its establishment. “Though AIIMS Vijaypur was set up only about a year and a half ago and has already started several super-specialty services, it would be unrealistic to expect it to fulfill all healthcare needs in such a short span. The institute itself is grappling with staff shortages, which is a challenge that must be addressed progressively,” he stated.

The BJP leader lauded AIIMS Vijaypur for inviting doctors from reputed institutions across the country to conduct workshops and training programmes. He said such initiatives help enhance the skills of local medical professionals and improve patient care standards. “Extending the same invitation to doctors working abroad is a forward-looking step. When doctors with international exposure come here, they bring not only expertise but also global best practices,” he noted.

Raman Suri further asserted that hiring doctors educated in Jammu Kashmir at AIIMS Vijaypur will directly contribute to improving healthcare services and infrastructure in the region. “Doctors who have an emotional connect with this land understand the unique challenges faced by our people. Their involvement will strengthen trust, improve outcomes, and uplift the overall healthcare ecosystem,” he said.

Raman Suri expressed hope that more doctors from Jammu and Kashmir working overseas will come forward to serve their homeland. “Serving one’s own people gives a sense of fulfillment that no foreign land can offer. This initiative can ignite that spirit and pave the way for a healthier, stronger Jammu Kashmir,” he added.
