SHOPIAN: In its continued commitment to fostering a healthy, safe, and drug-free environment for students, Police in Shopian conducted a special checking drive across the district, targeting shops located within a 100-meter radius of educational institutions.
The drive was part of an ongoing initiative to enforce the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions. During the inspection drive, a total of 26 shops were found violating COTPA regulations and were duly fined.
Shopkeepers and vendors were sensitized about the harmful effects of tobacco use and the legal consequences of selling such products within prohibited zones. They were categorically instructed not to sell tobacco or related products to minors or within restricted areas.
J&K Police reaffirmed its dedication to enforcing laws aimed at protecting youth from the dangers of tobacco and other addictive substances. Authorities emphasized that such drives will continue across the district to ensure strict compliance and discourage unhealthy and unlawful practices near schools and colleges. The public is urged to cooperate with police authorities and report any violations to help maintain a tobacco-free and healthy environment for students.
