JAMMU: A one day Training Program under National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP) was today organized by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer Jammu with the support of Directorate of Health Services Jammu and National Health Mission (NHM) J&K. The program focused on different components of NRCP including Management of Animal bite cases, Pre & Post exposure prophylaxis to victims and timely administration of Anti-Rabies Vaccine and Rabies Immunoglobulin to prevent deaths.

Held under the leadership of Secretary, Health and Medical Education, J&K Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, and the supervision of Dr. Director, Health Services Jammu Rakesh Magotra, the training witnessed participation from Female Multipurpose Workers drawn from all the Nine Health Blocks and Jammu Urban under administrative control of District Jammu.

Dy. Director Schemes Dr.Poonam Sethi; Dy. Director Dentistry Dr. Sanjay Sharma; State Tuberculosis Officer Dr. Jyoti Jolly; Controller Stores Dr.Ritesh Khullar; State Venereologist Dr. Kiran Kailu; Divisional Nutrition officer Dr. Jitendra Kour; Assistant Director HEB Dr. Simmi Verma and District Health Officer (DHO) Jammu  Dr. Samina Nazir  also attended the training inauguration ceremony. Dr. Deepika Dewan MD Community Medicine (Medical Officer) and Dr. Mehak Gupta (District Epidemiologist, NHM) were the Resource Persons.

Chief Medical officer Dr. Harbaksh Singh highlighted the role of  Peripheral Health staff in timely management of Animal bite cases to prevent the occurrence of deadly rabies disease. He stressed that though Rabies has 100% mortality but it is completely preventable also. He also emphasised that a strong inter-sectoral approach is essential in tackling rabies. He also discussed the ground level challenges faced by Health workers in implementation of this programme.

Director Health Services Dr. Rakesh Magotra and Dy. Director Schemes Dr. Poonam Sethi also shared their valuable insights regarding implementation of NRCP in the field with the Participants.  The training comprised technical sessions, case studies, and hands-on exercises to enhance skills of the FMPHWs in disease surveillance and management.
