JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Management Jammu observed Samvidhan Hatya Diwas on 25th June 2026 with the objective of fostering awareness about constitutional values, democratic principles, and the significance of safeguarding fundamental rights. The programme featured documentary screening, insightful addresses, and student-led activities, encouraging reflection on the importance of constitutional governance and democratic institutions. The event was presided over by Prof. B. S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, in the presence of Prof. Shyam Narayan Lal, Chairperson, Anandam-The Center for Happiness, and Dr. Pratik Maheshwari, Faculty, IIM Jammu.

Samvidhan Hatya Diwas is observed on 25th June to commemorate the proclamation of the Emergency in 1975, a period widely regarded as one of the most challenging phases in India's democratic history. The observance serves as an occasion to reflect upon the importance of safeguarding constitutional values, democratic institutions, civil liberties, and the rule of law. It encourages citizens, particularly the younger generation, to understand the significance of the Constitution and remain committed to preserving the democratic ethos of the nation.

A significant highlight of the programme was the collective reading of the Preamble to the Constitution of India, led by Prof. B. S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, wherein faculty members, staff, and students reaffirmed their commitment to the constitutional values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity that form the bedrock of the world's largest democracy. The occasion also featured a documentary screening on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, which provided the students with valuable historical insights into the Emergency period and underscored the importance of preserving democratic institutions, civil liberties, and constitutional principles.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students through a series of engaging activities, including a debate competition, speech competition, quiz competition, and a skit presentation. These student-led events provided a vibrant platform for critical thinking, dialogue, and creative expression on themes related to constitutional values, democratic principles, and responsible citizenship. The active involvement of students reflected their keen interest in understanding India's constitutional heritage and democratic ethos. Quiz winners were felicitated with saplings, symbolizing growth, sustainability, and the nurturing of constitutional values, while all participants will be awarded e-certificates in recognition of their enthusiastic participation.

In his insightful address, Prof. B. S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, welcomed the participants and reflected on the enduring significance of constitutional values in safeguarding India's democratic fabric. Drawing from his personal experiences during the Emergency period, he shared interesting anecdotes that offered students a deeper understanding of the challenges and public sentiments of that time. He urged the youth to value the freedoms and rights guaranteed by the Constitution and emphasized that liberty, freedom of expression, and the rule of law are the cornerstones of a vibrant democracy. Stressing the importance of strong democratic institutions and constitutional safeguards, he noted that revisiting such chapters of history serves to strengthen our collective commitment to the ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. He urged students to remain informed, responsible, and ethically aware citizens, committed to upholding constitutional values and contributing meaningfully to the progress of the nation.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Shyam Narayan Lal, Chairperson, Anandam – The Center for Happiness, IIM Jammu, reflected on the historical significance of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas and traced key milestones in the evolution of the Indian Constitution. Through insightful references to historical events and engaging anecdotes, he helped participants understand the constitutional and democratic developments that have shaped modern India. He underscored the importance of constitutional literacy, civic responsibility, and active participation in preserving democratic values, particularly among the youth.

The event culminated with a vote of thanks delivered by Shri Vijay Anant Kamble, Administrative Officer, Student Affairs, followed by the National Song and the National Anthem. The observance of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas at IIM Jammu concluded with a collective pledge to uphold the values and ideals enshrined in the Constitution of India. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to preserving the principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, recognizing that a vibrant democracy flourishes when constitutional values are respected, protected, and passed on to future generations. The programme served as a meaningful reminder of the shared responsibility of every  citizen to uphold the spirit of the Constitution and contribute towards a stronger, more inclusive, and progressive India (Viksit Bharat).

The event was coordinated by various student clubs and committees under the guidance of the Student Affairs Office, IIM Jammu, reflecting the Institute's commitment to fostering student leadership, teamwork, and active participation in initiatives that promote constitutional awareness and civic responsibility.
