• Institute recognised for outstanding contribution to engineering education and academic development; showcases indigenously developed drone technology designed for high-altitude and low-temperature operations

SRINAGAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has achieved a significant national distinction by securing the First Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Engineering Education and Academic Development at the 12th edition of Vibrant India 2026 – Most Vibrant Expo on Government Achievements, held at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi, from October 23 to 25.

Representing the Institute at the prestigious three-day national exhibition, Dr. Dinesh Kumar Rajendran, Mr. Aban Habib, and Mr. Shebaan Habib showcased an innovative indigenous drone prototype specifically designed to operate in high-altitude and low-temperature environments. The recognition underscores NIT Srinagar's growing contribution to engineering innovation, indigenous technology development, and research-driven solutions addressing complex operational challenges.

The demonstration highlighted the Institute's sustained efforts towards developing indigenous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technologies capable of functioning under the demanding environmental conditions prevalent across the Himalayan region and other geographically challenging high-altitude areas.

Organised by NNS Media Group as part of Meri Dilli Utsav, Vibrant India 2026 served as a national platform bringing together government organisations, public sector enterprises, academic and research institutions, and other key stakeholders to showcase significant achievements, developmental initiatives, technological advancements, and contributions across diverse sectors.

The exhibition featured an extensive range of displays and initiatives concerning Indian Railways, mines, coal, Jal Shakti, tourism, agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries, and several other sectors of national importance, providing an opportunity for participating organisations to highlight their achievements and innovations.

The indigenous drone technology presented by the NIT Srinagar team addresses several critical engineering challenges associated with the operation of UAVs in high-altitude environments. Such conditions pose considerable technical constraints, as low ambient temperatures and reduced atmospheric air density can adversely influence battery performance, propulsion efficiency, flight endurance, and overall structural reliability.

By focusing on these operational challenges, the prototype reflects the increasing significance of indigenous aerospace and drone technology development, particularly for specialised applications in mountainous terrains, remote geographical locations, and environmentally demanding regions.

The technology also holds potential for a range of practical applications, including infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, high-altitude observation, and other specialised operations requiring dependable aerial systems capable of functioning in challenging environmental conditions.

Congratulating the team on this notable achievement, Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Anurag Misra, Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman, and Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC), Prof. Babar Ahmad, extended their appreciation and congratulations to the participating members.

The Institute's leadership commended the team's dedication and efforts in representing NIT Srinagar at a prominent national-level exhibition and effectively demonstrating its engineering capabilities, technological expertise, and commitment to innovation.

They also emphasised the importance of fostering a robust culture of innovation, promoting indigenous technology development, and strengthening industry-oriented research to develop practical, technology-driven solutions capable of addressing real-world challenges.

The achievement marks an important milestone in NIT Srinagar's continued efforts to advance engineering education, promote indigenous research and development, and contribute to India's technological self-reliance through innovative solutions tailored to the country's diverse geographical and operational requirements.
