AWANTIPORA: As part of a series of outreach initiatives aimed at promoting health awareness, preventive healthcare, and social responsibility among young people, Syed Mantaqui Memorial College of Nursing and Medical Technology (SMMCON&MT), in collaboration with the office of Dean Outreach, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), organised an AIDS Awareness Programme at Government High School Chandhara under the Red Ribbon Club. The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir AIDS Control Society (JKACS), Department of Health and Medical Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, and the J&K Paramedical and Nursing Council.

The programme aimed to sensitize students about HIV/AIDS, including its modes of transmission, prevention, early detection, and treatment, while addressing common misconceptions and emphasizing the need to eliminate stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.

A key highlight was an educational skit presented by B.Sc. Nursing students, demonstrating preventive measures, the importance of timely testing and counselling, and the need for empathy and support. An interactive question-and-answer session provided students an opportunity to clarify their doubts and discuss common misconceptions. IEC material, including awareness pamphlets, was also distributed to reinforce learning and encourage the dissemination of accurate information within the community. The students took a pledge to promote AIDS awareness and contribute towards building a healthy and inclusive society.

The school authorities and local community leaders appreciated the efforts of SMMCON & MT and Dean Outreach, IUST, and emphasized the importance of conducting regular health awareness programmes for young people. The programme was coordinated by Ms. Mubashir Bashir, In-charge, SMMCON & MT, along with other faculty members of the college.
