- DPAP senior leader highlights local customs, Dal Lake incidents, and NFHS Data to strengthen case for alcohol prohibition in the region
SRINAGAR: Peer Bilal, DPAP Senior leader, has a strong case for a liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir, driven by concerns about alcohol consumption, respecting local customs, and etiquette. The recent incidents of tourists behaving inappropriately, such as urinating in the iconic Dal Lake, have sparked outrage and highlighted the need for greater responsibility and respect for local traditions.
He said that, 'Given Jammu and Kashmir's Muslim-majority population, the argument for a liquor ban is compelling. The success of prohibition in other states like Gujarat, Bihar, and Meghalaya serves as a precedent, demonstrating that such a ban can be effective in reducing alcohol-related issues and promoting a more respectful and responsible society'
Peer Bilal said, 'data from the National Family Health Survey reveals that while 10.5% of men and 0.2% of women in Jammu and Kashmir consume liquor, the majority of the population does not consume liquor, lending support to the argument for a ban'
