JAMMU: The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu today organized Gender Sensitization workshop for the P.G Students and scholars of the Department of Physics, University of Jammu.
Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies was the resource person. She spoke on the theme: “Gender Sensitization and Gender Justice: Legal perspective”. She began her presentation by explaining the concept of Sex and Gender and how it is constructed and practised in the society. Further, she elaborated on the institution of patriarchy and how it is used as medium to discriminate and exploit the women in the society and contributes to number of problems such as harassment, domestic violence, dowry deaths, etc.
She also discussed the various forms of harassment against women at workplace and also gave details regarding the legal safeguards available for the protection of the women. While talking to participants she gave few examples to illustrate the causes of gender inequality in society and also discussed the equality guaranteed under Constitution of India.
Prof. Arun Bharti, Head, Department of Physics, emphasized on the importance of such workshops and applauded the efforts of the Centre for providing the opportunity to be part of it. Further he stressed that whenever we talk about gender it’s not only about women’s issues rather men’s issues should also be discussed.
Prof. Ramni Gupta also spoke on the issues related to women and also stressed that there is a dire need of providing equality to all the genders and equal respect as well as acknowledgement should be given to everyone irrespective of gender.
Large number of students, scholars and faculty members from the Department of Commerce very keenly participated in the workshop. Dr. Saranjit Kaur, Faculty, Centre for Women’s studies conducted the program and presented formal vote of thanks. Ms. Kunzang Angmo, Faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu coordinated the program.
