JAMMU: People's Democratic Party legislative party leader and MLA Pulwama, Waheed ur Rehman Parra, has launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC) and the Jammu & Kashmir government for their silence on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Para called their inaction a "betrayal" of the Muslim community, pointing out that Jammu & Kashmirâthe only Muslim-majority state in India with 50 Muslim MLAsâfailed its people by not passing a resolution against the bill.
Parra said that, âIf Tamil Nadu and Karnataka can pass resolutions opposing the Waqf Bill, why is J&K silent?â Parra asked," âThis silence, in the face of a bill that erodes Muslim religious rights by handing over greater control of Waqf properties to the government, amounts to a tacit endorsement.â Parra accused the NC of engaging in double-speak. âNC MLAs protest theatrically for the cameras, yet their leadershipâincluding the Chief Minister and NC patronâwelcomes the very Union Minister who introduced the Bill. This hypocrisy is a grave insult to the Muslim community,â he said.
He further stated, âFirst they surrendered on Article 370, then on statehood, and now on religious autonomy. No resolution on the Waqf Bill is nothing short of silent approval.â Calling for an immediate discussion in the house, Parra urged the J&K Assembly Speaker to pass a resolution condemning the Waqf Bill and to stand with other states that have taken a firm position in defence of minority rights.
Parra rejected this justification outright. âThis is a weak excuse. Hiding behind technicalities only exposes a lack of political will. The NC must stop playing safe and start standing up for the rights and dignity of the people it claims to represent,â he said.
