JAMMU: In response to the shifting global landscape and emerging geopolitical challenges, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu organized a compelling panel discussion on the theme ‘Nation First’ on 20th May 2025 at the Mandapam Auditorium. The event sought to foster a stronger sense of national identity, cultural pride, and civic duty among the academic community.

The session was graced by Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu,  The event also featured other eminent personalities including Prof. Shyam Narayan Lal, Chairperson, Media and Publication Committee and Anandam, IIM Jammu; Brigadier Neeraj Kumar Soni (Retd.); faculty, IIM Jammu, Dr. Rajesh Sikka, faculty, IIM Jammu, Brigadier Dr. Vijay Sagar Dheman; and Cmdr Kesavan Baskkaran, Chief Administrative Officer, IIM Jammu.

Prof. Shyam Narayan Lal,Chairperson, Media and Publication Committee and Anandam, IIM Jammu opened the session with a contextual introduction, followed by active engagement with students and participants who shared their views on patriotism and national service. Brig. Neeraj Kumar Soni (Retd.) faculty, IIM Jammudelivered a presentation highlighting India’s growing self-reliance in defence and its evolving military capabilities.

In his address, Prof. B.S. Sahay paid heartfelt tribute to the Indian Armed Forces and expressed deep respect for the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He emphasized that a person’s identity is intrinsically tied to their nation, urging citizens to prioritize national interest over personal comfort. Citing his own decision to stay on campus during difficult times as a mark of duty, he advocated for the promotion of indigenous products as a step toward economic independence.Prof. Sahay also invoked India’s rich literary and spiritual heritage, referencing the teachings of Lord Buddha and the nation’s legacy of peace and resilience.

He praised India's strategic advancements, such as successful non-combative military operations, and warned against internal threats that could undermine national unity. Highlighting India's progress in digital innovation—such as UPI, QR-based payments, and platforms like the Government e-Marketplace (GeM)—he portrayed a nation on the rise, resilient and visionary. He concluded with a stirring affirmation that ‘Nation First’ (राष्ट्रप्रथम) is not just a slogan but a guiding principle that must be embedded in every citizen’s conscience.

The panel drew connections between ancient wisdom and contemporary realities. Drawing from the Ramayana, speakers reflected on the enduring sentiment of “Janani Janmabhoomi SwargādapiGarīyasī”—the mother and motherland are greater than heaven. Insights from the Mahabharata reinforced the idea that protecting one’s values and homeland through righteous means is central to Sanatan Dharma.

The discussion reinforced how true patriotism, when grounded in cultural awareness and moral responsibility, becomes a powerful driver of national growth. Speakers emphasized the vital role of academic institutions in cultivating ethical, socially responsible leaders.The evening became patriotic with the partriotic songs by Prof. B. S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu along with the faculty, staff and Ph.D Students.

The event concluded with a reaffirmation of IIM Jammu’s commitment to nation-building through education, civic awareness, and leadership. By championing the spirit of ‘Nation First’, the Institute continues to nurture future leaders dedicated to the service and progress of the motherland.
