From Srinagar to Shopian and Kupwara to Kathua, district administrations and organizations organized awareness campaigns, cultural events, expert talks, rallies, and pledges, underscoring a shared resolve to combat the growing menace of substance abuse. The events, aligned with this year’s global theme “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All,” emphasized a compassionate, multi-pronged approach rooted in prevention, scientific treatment, community engagement, and social reintegration.

SRINAGAR: To mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a significant awareness and interactive event was held today at SKIMS MCH Bemina, Srinagar. The mega event was held under the aegis of the newly established Advanced Centre for Mental Health and Addiction Medicine with support from Addiction Treatment Facility, under the Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, in collaboration with Narcotics Control Bureau and Group on Concerned Citizens (GCC).

The programme was organised in collaboration with key stakeholders, including experts from the Department of psychiatry, JK Police, Narcotics Control Bureau, Education Department, Drug Control Department and other departments. The event started with deliberation on the theme of today’s program “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All” which was graced by eminent speakers and delegates from all walks of life.

Minister for Agriculture Production, Rural Development and  Panchayati Raj, Javid Ahmad Dar, was the chief guest on the occasion. He addressed the persistent stigma surrounding substance use. He strongly advocated for recognizing addiction as a medical disorder and urged society to offer compassionate care, dignity and reintegration to the affected individuals instead of discrimination.

Javid Dar emphasized the importance of maintaining mental health and building willpower to strengthen individuals against the challenges of drug abuse. This focus can help the individuals develop resilience and overcome adversity. Khursheed Ahmad Ganai, guest of honour, shed light on the alarming rise in substance use in the region. Keeping in view the current data and trends, he emphasized the need for multisectoral collaboration and urgent policy-level interventions to combat the issue.

Dr. Mohd Ashraf Ganaie, Director SKIMS, called attention to the genetic and biological underpinnings of substance use disorders. He emphasized the need for a deeper scientific understanding of addiction and supported a shift in perception from behavioral blame to neurobiological insight. DIG Civil Defence Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain Mir, spoke about the importance of demand reduction alongside the police’s vital role in supply control. He advocated for addressing the root causes of substance use, particularly among youth and building resilience against failure and rejection.

Dr. Fazl Qadir Parray, Principal SKIMS Medical College and Hospital, stressed the need for evidence-based treatment approaches in alignment with this year’s international theme. He highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts, research and a patient-centered care model for sustainable recovery. The event began with a warm welcome address by Professor Abdul Majid, Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Organising Chairman of the event.

In his remarks, he highlighted the collective responsibility required to address the growing issues of substance use with special focus on improving the access to care, controlling supply chain, awareness and advocacy, breaking the stigma and shame, collaboration of concerned stakeholders and role of meditation and healthy life styles for preventing youth resorting to drug addiction.

Dr. Nizam-ud-din Dar, Organising Secretary of the event, provided a detailed overview of the addiction services currently operational at SKIMS MCH and the Prison Hospital. He reviewed the progress, made so far, acknowledged the existing challenges and underscored the need for further strengthening of de-addiction and rehabilitation services at both facilities.

 In addition to the expert talks, undergraduate students presented posters on themes related to substance use. The activity was aimed at promoting awareness and encouraging creative academic engagement with the topic. The top three posters were selected by a jury pane  and the winning students were felicitated during the event in recognition of their efforts and contributions. The first prize was awarded to Syed Rimsha Andrabi, Final Year MBBS student, second to Sheikh Aiman Amin, Final Year MBBS student while Hibba Ishaq, a second year MBBS student, clinched the third position.

Following the inauguration and thematic segment, a panel discussion brought together the experts from diverse backgrounds to deliberate on integrated strategies for tackling drug abuse in Jammu & Kashmir.

The panellists included Dr. Mushtaq A. Margoob, Senior psychiatrist and internationally acclaimed mental health professional, Dr. Farooq A. Kaloo Mr. Abhishek Sharma Narcotics bureau Srinagar, Dr. Fiaz Maqbool Fazili,  Dr. Zubair Saleem, Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad Bhat Professor and Head of Department SPM and Shabir Ahmad Pandit, Assistant Drug Controller, Kashmir.

The discussion focused on practical steps towards policy development, community outreach, interdepartmental coordination and healthcare strengthening. A common consensus emerged on the need for collaborative frameworks to ensure eradication of drug abuse from the Union Territory. The famous slogan “Prevention is better than Cure” was seen to be the main mantra to eradicate this menace with importance of social values and indigenous religious practices as the strongest coping mechanism to be encouraged in our society.

SRINAGAR: To mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the District Administration Srinagar today organized an awareness programme at Government College of Education here today. Deputy Commissioner(DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo was the Chief Guest of the programme aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and deterrent measures undertaken against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner laid emphasis on effective awareness generation against drug abuse to sensitize people particularly the youth about its detrimental impact on individuals, families and society. He called for a compassionate and coordinated approach involving deterrence, rehabilitation, and sustained awareness campaign.

The DC emphasized the need to address drug abuse at the grassroots level, advocating for a compassionate approach in dealing with those affected from addiction. During the seminar, elaborate discussion on the NDPS Act and its enforcement in curbing illicit trafficking,  importance of early identification and timely recovery interventions in combating substance abuse was emphasised.

Later, the DC felicitated the meritorious students for their outstanding contributions in anti drugs awareness campaign. The initiative was the part of ongoing Drugs Free Jammu and Kashmir campaign reaffirming the collective commitment to “Say No to Drugs” and to work together towards a healthier, happier and drug-free society.

BUDGAM: In context with the International Day against Drug Abuse, a one day seminar was organised by district administration Budgam in collaboration with the Social Welfare department, here today. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Budgam, Dr.Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat presided over the function as chief guest. Besides ADC Budgam, CMO, DSWO, DIO, representatives from education department, other officers and officials of the department were present on the occasion.

The event witnessed active participation from students, officials, and civil society members, reflecting a collective commitment towards combating the menace of drug abuse in the district. On the occasion, DC administered a pledge to the participants against drug abuse. He emphasised generating massive awareness on drug abuse, followed by enforcement and treatment to curb the menace in the society

He said, though the civil and police administrations are doing their part efficiently, however, as a society we all have to play the role and save our youth. Dr Bilal warned of strict action by the district administration against peddlers, assuring that every single peddler will be put behind bars. DC said small camps need to be organised at village level so that awareness against the menace of drugs percolates to the person living in the last corner of the district.

He emphasized the crucial role that parents, teachers, and educational institutions play in addressing this pressing social issue. He highlighted that timely guidance and emotional support from families and mentors can act as the first line of defense against substance abuse among youth.

DC said, “we should treat drug victims as a patient not as a criminal, so that together we could take him out from this drug- net which is spreading in our community at large.” The programme featured thought-provoking skits performed by students and artists from the Cultural Academy, conveying powerful messages on the consequences of drug addiction and the importance of community involvement in prevention efforts.

Earlier, DSWO reiterated the department’s commitment to continuing awareness drives, community outreach initiatives, and support services under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and other welfare schemes. Later during the felicitation ceremony, DC felicitated those who have excelled in marathon, volleyball, basketball, yoga & meditation competitions.

BARAMULLA: District administration Baramulla today organised a vibrant awareness programme at Kashmir University North Campus Delina to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event was held under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and aligned with this year’s global theme "Break the Cycle". #StopOrganizedCrime.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, was the chief guest, while Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla, Gurinderpal Singh, attended as the guest of honour. The event witnessed participation from students, officers of various departments, and civil society members.

Addressing the gathering, DC called on youth to take the lead in raising awareness against substance abuse. He stressed that collective efforts from families, educational institutions, and communities are vital to building a drug-free society. He also appreciated the contributions of volunteers and organisations working in the field of de-addiction and prevention.

SSP highlighted ongoing enforcement efforts to dismantle drug networks and urged citizens, particularly the youth, to stay vigilant and cooperate with authorities. He reiterated the importance of community involvement in both prevention and intervention. Programme featured a signature wall, plantation drive, selfie points, and the screening of an awareness video developed by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR).

KULGAM: A mega district-level event held at conference hall mini-secretariat besides seminars, awareness programmes, rallies, plantation drives and other events marked the commemoration of International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking across Kulgam district. The programme was presided over by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Athar Aamir Khan.

Speaking on the occasion, DC stated that the district is adopting a multi-pronged strategy to combat the growing menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. He emphasized the need for a collective fight involving all stakeholders, highlighting that a comprehensive and united approach is vital to effectively address this societal challenge.

DC said that there is commitment to zero tolerance against drugs, adding that strict action is being taken against those involved in drug trafficking, while adequate rehabilitation support is being extended to victims through institutional mechanisms. One of the key highlights shared by the DC was the district’s significant progress in eliminating illicit crop cultivation.

In 2023, poppy was cultivated over 750 kanals, which was entirely destroyed. In 2024, the figure drastically dropped to just 40 kanals, and as of now, Kulgam has achieved zero poppy cultivation. Similarly, bung cultivation has also been reduced to zero in the district. This remarkable achievement was made possible through vigorous enforcement efforts and the promotion of alternative crops among farmers, he added.

DC also added that the district has been conducting intensive awareness campaigns under Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir initiative. These efforts include widespread public outreach involving youth, students, religious leaders and the community at large through cultural, educational, and IEC-based programmes. On the occasion, DC flagged off an IEC Van to further strengthen awareness efforts, and launched a signature campaign to mobilize community support for a drug-free society.

He also appreciated the efforts of the district Drug De-Addiction Centre (DDAC) for their role in the rehabilitation of patients, terming it crucial in supporting individuals on the path to recovery and reintegration. Importantly, DC informed that 100 percent of pharmacies in the district are now under CCTV surveillance and operate with a computerized billing system, ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and control over the sale of drugs.

Resource persons also briefed the participants, sharing insights into preventive and rehabilitative measures. ADC Viqar Ahmed Giri, ACR, Riyaz Ahmad Shah and other officers were present during the programme

The programme also witnessed  enthusiastic participation of frontline workers, officials from various departments, students, civil society members, and other stakeholders, all pledging their commitment to making Kulgam a drug-free and Khushaal Kulgam. Similarly functions were held at Sub District- Tehsil level.

  • Distt admin Pulwama organises mega awareness event on World Drug Day

PULWAMA: District administration Pulwama, in collaboration with the District Social Welfare office, today organised a mega event at Government Degree College Pulwama to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day).

The event focused on raising awareness about drug abuse and the need for community-level prevention. Resource persons shared insights on the current situation of substance abuse and highlighted the importance of early interventions. They stressed that prevention is both cost-effective and essential for public health.

On the occasion, medical experts spoke about the health risks associated with drug abuse and underlined the importance of timely treatment and counseling. They also discussed the role of awareness in preventing addiction among youth.

An interactive session was also held, where participants took part in discussions and activities aimed at encouraging a drug-free lifestyle. Besides, a collective pledge was also taken by the participants and stakeholders, affirming their resolve to build a drug-free and healthy environment in their respective communities.

The event was attended by the officials from the Department of Social Welfare, staff of District Mission Coordinator (Mission Shakti), Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), ASHAs, Self Help Group (SHG) members, while students from various colleges and youth also participated in the programme.

  • DCO organizes awareness/ training prog. to observe Intl. Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking

KULGAM: In observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking, Drug Control Organization (DCO) Kulgam today organized an awareness-cum-training programme at Town Hall Devsar. The event witnessed active participation of local chemists, who were sensitized about the prevailing drug abuse scenario, its detrimental effects on society, and their critical role in combating this menace.

During the training session, various software modules related to the implementation of a computerized billing system were also demonstrated to the participants, aiming to streamline pharmacy operations and enhance transparency in drug sales.

Assistant Drug Controller, Rumessa Mohammad, along with Drug Control Officers attended the event and addressed the participants. They stressed the need to bridge gaps in prescription drug misuse and underscored preventive strategies to curb the rising threat of drug abuse.

In a parallel event, an awareness rally followed by a roadshow was held at Quimoh, Kulgam. Organized by the Drug Control Organization in collaboration with local chemists, the event featured placards, banners, and slogans advocating for a drug-free society. The rally aimed to amplify the message of collective responsibility in tackling substance abuse.

  • DLSA, Dawn comm. commemorates Int’l Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Budgam

BUDGAM: In pursuance to the directions of the National Legal Services Authority,  DAWN Unit Budgam (Drug Awareness And Wellness Navigation For a Drug Free Indian) of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Budgam in  collaboration with Drug Department Budgam organized an anti drug rally from the District Court Complex Budgam to the District Hospital Budgam.

The rally was conducted under the chairmanship of O.P. Bhagat, Chairman DLSA (Pr.Distt.& sessions Judge) Budgam and under the supervision of by Nusrat Ali Hakak, Secretary, DLSA, (Nodal Officer of the DAWN Unit Committee) Budgam, and was attended by Drug Inspector Budgam and  other officials of Drug office, several DAWN unit members, officials of DLSA and TLSCs Budgam, LADCs, Panel Lawyers, PLVs and other stakeholders of the Unit.

In the rally, the slogans were raised ‘Say No to Drugs & Yes to Life’ ‘Drugs free under Yuddh Nashe ke Virudh’, ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’, ‘Nope to Dope’ etc. Participants were holding placards displaying the message Stop Drugs, and pamphlets were distributed to the general public. The DAWN committee members are committed to bring down awareness to the basic unit of society, and eliminate the drug from society and make the society drug free.

SHOPIAN: In the observance of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, district administration Shopian today organised various events at Padpawan Shopian. To commemorate the day, an awareness camp was held at Padpawan, Heerpora area which was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Shishir Gupta and attended by SSP, Anayat Ali; ADDC, Dr.Nasir Ahmad Lone; ADC, Dr.Dr.Zakir Hussain Faaz, and other officers of district, including from police besides by cross section of residents.

Massive participation, numbering in thousands of people, students, and officials were seen at the venue, affirming a strong desire and collective commitment against the raging menace of drugs. DC strongly emphasised the role of teachers and parents. He asked the gathering, especially students to act as ambassadors in the society and highlight the ramifications of substance abuse.

Spreading a word against the disastrous consequences of the menace for the families and communities must be taken up proactively by one and all, urged the DC. SSP Shopian presented the outline of a series of stringent measures being taken by the police including detention of peddlers, attachment of properties of illegal drug traders, etc, and sought effective cooperation of public, spirited individuals and organisations to put up a fight against the twin challenges of drugs and trafficking.

At the outset, ADC in his opening remarks highlighted the strategy involving a multi-pronged approach against drug addiction in the society. A pledge taking ceremony was also held at the occasion during which participants committed themselves towards the furtherance of ‘Drug Free J&K.’ Earlier in the morning, thousands converged for the Marathon on Mughal Road at Padpawan, who marched towards Heerpora. The marathon was spearheaded by ADC, Shopian, Dr. Zakir Hussain Faaz.

BANDIPORA: District Administration Bandipora in collaboration with the Social Welfare department Thursday organised an awareness-cum-cultural programme at the Auditorium Hall of Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS) Kaloosa to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

The event was aimed at raising awareness about the growing menace of substance abuse and mobilizing community support to build a drug-free society. The event was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Bandipora, Manzoor Ahmad Qadri, and witnessed the presence of Brand Ambassador NMBA, Faisal Ali Dar; Dy CEO, District Information Officer, DySP DAR, DySP, representatives from Health department, Excise department, civil society representatives, ASHA workers, AWWs, DDAC members, representatives from the Sankalp Hub, and a large gathering of school students from various educational institutions across the district.

Speaking on the occasion, DC said that earlier, children and youth would die due to epidemics, but those were overcome through strong public health campaigns and collective efforts. “Today, we face a new epidemic which is substance abuse and cannot be eliminated by government programmes alone. It requires active support from parents, civil society, educational institutions, and every stakeholder,” he stressed.

He urged the public to remain vigilant, especially towards youth, and emphasized the need to rehabilitate those already affected. He reiterated NMBA's goal to create a drug-free society through awareness, engagement, and action. On the occasion, DySP spoke on the role of police in curbing drug-related crimes and emphasized the need for community cooperation. He urged students and the general public to immediately report any suspicious activity or drug abuse cases to the police, ensuring swift action.

District Epidemiologist, appreciated the coordination among departments in addressing the issue of substance abuse. He stated that addiction often starts with habits like smoking, which eventually become gateways to more dangerous drugs. Junaid Ahmad, a student of NM BHSS Kaloosa, and Manaan Wani from High School Bagh, delivered impactful speeches on the ill effects of drug abuse, calling for a united stand against addiction and promoting awareness among peers.

The cultural highlight of the programme was a Kashmiri musical performance and a skit by Reshi Cultural Society, both of which carried heartfelt appeals to those affected by drug abuse to return to a life of health and dignity.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks presented by the District Information Officer, who appreciated the participation of various departments, civil society members, and students. He urged everyone, especially youth and the general public, to act as catalysts in spreading awareness and contributing meaningfully to the mission of eradicating drug abuse from the district.

  • DLSA Anantnag observes International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

ANANTNAG: In accordance to the calendar of activities issued by the J&K State Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Anantnag in collaboration with the district administration Anantnag and the department of Social Welfare today observed the ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ at Town hall Anantnag.

The event was held under the supervision of Secretary DLSA Anantnag, Fouzia Paul. During the programme, the importance of ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and  Illicit Trafficking’ was highlighted as a global reminder to raise awareness, promote preventive  measures and strengthen cooperation among nations to curb drug abuse and trafficking.

The programme was attended by the District Development Officer, officials of the Social Welfare department, officials J&K Excise Department, officials of Education Department, Doctors from Health department, Legal Aid Defence Counsels, students and PLVs. Resource persons from the DLSA Anantnag, namely Muzaffar Ahmad Bhat, Deputy LADC and Danish Qadir, Assistant LADC Anantnag, highlighted the various legal provisions, which deal with drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

  • Doda observes International Day Against Drug Abuse amid awareness activities, cultural events

DODA: The District Administration Doda organised a special event in the Community Hall Doda to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, featuring events centered on  this year’s theme “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime.”

Deputy Commissioner (DC)    Harvinder Singh was the Chief Guest, and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep Kumar Mehta was the Guest of Honour. School students, civil society members, representatives from NGOs and government officials formed part of the awareness event. The program started with a welcome speech by District Social Welfare OfficerTariq Qazi, who shared the efforts being made through awareness campaigns to encourage grassroots level community participation in the fight against the Drug abuse.  

Students delivered thought provoking speeches about the harmful effects of drugs and how youth can play a decisive role in fighting the menace. Cultural presentations by artists from the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, delivered important messages against drug abuse through music and dance. A short film titled “Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan” was screened to highlight the looming threat of drugs on the society and the need to eradicate the menace from the society.

In his address, the DC highlighted the importance of the day and shared the steps being taken by the administration to eliminate the menace of drug abuse. He called on everyone, especially young people and civil society members, to work together to make Doda a drug-free district. SSP Doda also spoke at the event and urged people to be alert, spread awareness, and support the cause.

Many officers including ACD, Executive Officer MC, Deputy CMO   ETO and the Nodal Officer of the Addiction Treatment Facility (ATF) also took part in the event.  The program ended with a display of paintings made by two students of Parisha and Palash on the theme of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. Both students were awarded trophies by DC and SSP Doda for their creative work. The day was a powerful reminder of the importance of preventing drug abuse and working together as a community to stop it.

RAJOURI: The District Administration Rajouri, on the directions of District Development CommissionerAbhishek Sharma,   today organized an awareness programme to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the District Headquarters.  

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from a cross-section of society including health professionals, educationists, students, media persons, and members of the civil society, who came together and pledged to contribute towards a Nasha Mukt Rajouri.

The event commenced with a formal welcome address followed by a pledge-taking ceremony, reaffirming the collective resolve to combat substance abuse. A compelling video presentation highlighting the journey from addiction to recovery was screened, setting the tone for the sessions ahead.

Head of Department Psychiatry, GMC Rajouri Dr. Parvaiz Alam delivered an insightful lecture, explaining the signs of addiction and the importance of timely intervention.  Students from various schools engaged the audience through a thought-provoking elocution competition on the theme “Nasha Mukt Bharat”.

Speaking on the occasion, District Social Welfare Officer Abdul Raheem provided an overview of key government schemes, helplines, and the pivotal role of welfare officers in supporting individuals battling addiction. He also shared the details of the ongoing Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Campaign being conducted under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan across Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies in the district.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) underscored the role of law enforcement in curbing the drug menace and informed the gathering about punitive measures under the NDPS Act. He urged the youth to resist peer pressure and assured continued vigilance and support from the police in creating a drug-free society.

Chief Medical Officer spoke on the severe health consequences of drug abuse and highlighted the available healthcare interventions, including counseling, treatment, and rehabilitation services under the Nasha Mukt Bharat initiative.

A representative from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA)  spoke on legal provisions under the NDPS Act and reiterated the importance of legal awareness in fighting the spread of drugs in society.

The event was attended by Secretary, DLSA Rajouri; Programme Officer, Mission Poshan; CDPO; District Youth Services & Sports Officer; District Cultural Officer; Chief Education Officer; and officials from other departments.

The programme concluded with a felicitation ceremony, wherein winners of various competitions—Painting, Debate, Sports, Quiz, and Essay Writing—organized in Higher Secondary Schools across the district under the “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” theme were honoured.

The event culminated with a Signature Campaign, symbolizing a united stand against drug abuse and reaffirming the district’s commitment towards a healthy, safe, and addiction-free society.

  • District Kathua observes International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking with series of awareness activities

KATHUA: To mark the observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a series of awareness programmes were today held across District Kathua under the aegis of District Administration.

The main district-level programme was organised by the District Social Welfare Office in the Conference Hall, DC Office Complex, on this year’s theme “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All.”

The event witnessed active participation of college students, field workers, social activists, and members of various departments including One Stop Centre and Mahila Shakti Kendra.

Kusum Salaria from Women Era Development Organisation recited a heartfelt poem depicting the harsh realities of a drug addict’s life. Dr. Rekha Sharma delivered an insightful PowerPoint presentation on substance misuse disorders and their impact on mental and physical health.

Representatives from Yuva Shakti Sangathan, Arpan and Mukesh, shared their real-life experiences in rehabilitating drug victims and highlighted the challenges encountered in the process.

Speaking on the occasion, District Social Welfare Officer Varun Choudhary underlined the growing threat of drug abuse and stressed the importance of creating awareness, especially among the youth. He said that youth are the future of the nation and keeping them away from the menace of drugs is a shared societal responsibility.

The programme concluded with the administration of a pledge to all participants to "Say No to Drugs" and spread the message of healthy and addiction-free living. NGOs and artists of the Nukkad Natak performed on June 24 were also felicitated on the occasion. Meanwhile, educational institutions across the district also held special events to observe the day.

At Government Degree College Mahanpur, the NSS Unit organised an Essay Writing Competition on the topic ‘Drug Abuse’, wherein students expressed their views on the ill effects of substance abuse. The event was held under the supervision of Dr. Sapna Devi and the overall guidance of Principal Dr. Sangeeta Sudan. Students from Semester 5 including Monika Sharma, Priti Sumbria, Amisha Rani, Susham, Meena, and Shivani participated in the competition with zeal and commitment.

Faculty members including Dr. Mohinder Nath Sharma, Dr. Rupalee Jasrotia, Prof. Binti Sharma, Nisha Kumari and others also attended the event and appreciated the efforts of the students.

At Government Degree College Marheen, an awareness programme was organised by the Department of Physical Education under the banner of Operation SANJIVANI. The three-day event included a Signature Campaign from June 24 to 26 and a pledge ceremony led by Principal Prof. (Dr.) Anupama Gupta.

  • Poonch unites against drug abuse: Awareness event marks International Day against Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking

POONCH: The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed with fervor and a strong message of awareness in Poonch on Wednesday. The event was held in the Conference Hall of Dak Bungalow, drawing the attention of a cross-section of society to the growing challenge posed by drug abuse and its associated impacts.

Chief Guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Tahir Mustafa Malik, presided over the program and emphasized the vital role of community participation and awareness in the campaign against the menace of drugs.  

District Social Welfare Officer Khalil A. Banday explained the significance and objectives of the day, highlighting the urgent need to sensitize the masses about the dangers posed by drugs and to foster a sense of responsibility within the community.

Representatives from the Health Department, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Sports Department, and Police also spoke on the occasion, focusing on the importance of inter‑departmental cooperation in tackling the issue of drug abuse effectively.

The event witnessed active participation from civil society representatives, including Muhammad Fareed Malik, Surjan Singh, and Sarfraz Mir, who shared their thoughts and stressed the urgency of collaborative efforts and enhanced awareness to eradicate the threat of drugs from society.

The program concluded with a consensus on intensifying preventive measures, extending support to those affected by drug abuse, and making Poonch a safer, healthier, and drug‑free district.

After the program, a rally  led by ADC Tahir Mustafa Malik was taken out to spread the message of Nasha Mukt Bharat. The rally, comprising hundreds of individuals, started from the Dak Bungalow and culminated at the Sports Stadium, with joining to mark the occasion.

  • DFCO organises UT wide awareness events to mark Int’l Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

JAMMU: To observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Drugs & Food Control Organisation (DFCO), J&K organized series of events/ awareness programs across all the Districts of Jammu & Kashmir to educate the public, particularly youth, about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of living a healthy, drug-free life.

An awareness program was held in the Conference Hall of Rama Krishna Mission Charitable Hospital, Udheywalla, Jammu. Speaking at the program, the Officers from DFCO underlined  the importance of public cooperation in tackling drug trafficking and ensuring strict regulation of pharmaceuticals to prevent misuse.

The event witnessed participation from students, healthcare professionals, law enforcement officials, and members of civil society. The event also featured informative sessions by Swami Yajnadhananda ji, Arvind Sharma, Assistant Drugs Controller, Jammu,    Pankaj Malhotra, ADC (HQ) J&K, Dr B.D Sharma Ex- DHS, Jammu & Swami Vijayeshananda ji .  The event was coordinated by S. Tejveer Singh Sodi, Drugs Control Officer.

Awareness event and a rally was also organised at Katra and Reasi respectively  to raise public awareness about the imminent need to combat the menace of drug abuse.  Drug and Food Control Organization Samba,  in  collaboration with the Chemists and Druggists Association, conducted an awareness program. The initiative included the distribution of IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) material, which was displayed prominently at nursing homes, chemist shops, and other key locations across Samba. The event was conducted under the supervision of Deputy Drug Controller Rajesh Anguralla,.

Awareness Programs and Rallies were also conducted at Doda, Kishtwar &  Bhaderwah, under the supervision of  Drug  Control Officer Munish Gupta,  which witnessed participation from a large number of people from different sections of the society & members of Pharma trade fraternity.

Udhampur Wing of Drugs & Food Control Organisation, in collaboration with the District administration and social welfare department   conducted an awareness program in which a singer cum guitarist Anirudh Sharma gave a mesmerising performance. The Program was chaired by Deputy Commissioner and attended by several district officers and students who were presented mementos for the cultural activities by the social welfare department’s Sanjeev Gupta, ADC, Udhampur coordinated the said program. Similarly, Rallies, Symposiums and Debate Competitions were also held in Rajouri, Poonch ,Kathua  and parts of Kashmir Division.   

  • District Admin Udhampur observes International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

UDHAMPUR: To mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, District Administration Udhampur, in collaboration with Department of Social Welfare, today organized an impressive program to sensitize the public, especially youth about the ill effects of drug abuse and the importance of a drug-free society.

The event commenced with inauguration of a signature campaign by Deputy Commissioner Saloni Rai and flagging off an awareness rally. More than 900 people including PLVs, representatives from Department of Youth Sports and Services, Health, Social Welfare, Poshan, school and colleges and members of civil society attended the event.

The rally witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, youth volunteers, officials and civil society members, all raising slogans and carrying placards to spread the message of Nasha Mukt Bharat. The event also featured captivating cultural performances including Nukkad Natak, a thought-provoking skit on Nasha Mukti and folk songs on drug addiction and the need for collective action.

Addressing the gathering, the DC emphasized the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for the youth both at home and in society. She underlined the role of families in maintaining friendly and open communication with children to detect and prevent drug abuse at an early stage. She further urged the youth to actively engage in recreational and extracurricular activities in addition to their academic pursuits to reduce mental stress and stay away from harmful influences.

Stressing on the need for collaborative responsibility, the DC called upon the public to act as Brand Ambassadors in the fight against drug abuse by reporting instances of drug consumption and trafficking to the authorities so that timely and appropriate action can be taken. DC appealed to everyone to take a firm pledge to neither indulge in drugs themselves nor allow others around them to fall into the trap of substance abuse.

Department of Social Welfare felicitated all the participants from school and colleges as well as youth who had participated in month long run up events to International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking. PO Poshan,  Subash Dogra, GM DIC Kishore Kumar, ACP Ashwani Hansa, District Social Welfare Officer Kanika Gupta along with other   officers of the District administration were part of the program.

  • IMHANS-K observes International Day against Drug Abuse with awareness drives across Valley

SRINAGAR: Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences Kashmir (IMHANS-K), Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College Srinagar, held a series of awareness programs and educational events across Kashmir today to raise awareness about drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The initiatives were part of the global campaign tied to this year’s theme, ‘Break the Cycle. Stop Organized Crime.’ The main event was held at IMHANS-K in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board included a workshop for Imams and Khateebs, with around 30 participants, focusing on the role of religious leaders in preventing drug abuse.

Dr. Yasir Hassan Rather, Professor and In-charge Head of De-addiction Services at IMHANS-K expressed concern over the alarming rise in substance use in the region. “There is an urgent need for collective and community-based interventions. Religious leaders can be proactive agents of change in curbing this crisis,” he said.

Dr. Arshad Hussain, Professor and Head of Unit at IMHANS-K, talked about the preventive strength of faith in his keynote address. He said faith can play a strong role in preventing drug use, adding that faith-based interventions can keep our children away from substances and serve as a formidable preventive strategy. He urged Imaams and Khateebs to utilize their pulpits, particularly Friday sermons, to disseminate messages of a drug-free lifestyle.

Dr. Fazle Roub, Assistant Professor and DM in Addiction Medicine at IMHANS-K, delivered an expert talk on the pivotal role faith leaders can play in prevention, early intervention, and reducing stigma around addiction. Saleem, a trained counselor, also presented a session on current trends in substance use and community-based strategies for intervention.

Moreover, IMHANS-K also extended its outreach through multiple parallel events across the valley. In another major outreach initiative, Dr. Heena Afzal and Dr. Syed Mehvish Yaver from IMHANS-K collaborated with Srinagar Police to conduct an interactive workshop at Broadway Education Hub. The session targeted students from 9th to 12th grades, as well as UPSC aspirants, and focused on early awareness and the importance of prevention.

In another such session, Dr. Sajid Mohammad, Assistant Professor, represented the institute at a program organized by the AMT School at Government Medical College Srinagar, where he discussed the current drug addiction landscape in Kashmir. Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Suhaff and Dr. Ubaidullah, both Assistant Professors, participated in awareness programs at B.Ed College, Srinagar and the Central University of Kashmir, respectively; delivering joint lectures on youth engagement and prevention strategies.

At Islamia College, Srinagar, Dr. Marya Zahoor, Senior Resident at IMHANS-K, addressed students under the college’s NSS Wing. She spoke about the psychological and societal toll of substance abuse. Organisers said that the day-long events aimed not just at awareness but also at catalyzing a coordinated response involving faith-based institutions, academic bodies, and the public to collectively tackle the region’s growing drug problem.

  • Awareness prog. organized at Bijbehara to mark Int’l Day against Drug Abuse

ANANTNAG: In observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Drug Control Authority Anantnag, in collaboration with the Chemists and Druggists Association Bijbehara, today organized an awareness-cum-education programme . The event witnessed active participation from various stakeholders including students of Boys Higher Secondary School Zirpara, civil society members, and chemists from Arwani, Sangam, Tulkhun, Zirpara, and adjoining areas of Tehsil Bijbehara.

The programme aimed to educate the participants on the steps needed for the elimination of drug and substance abuse. Key speakers included Drug Control Officers of Anantnag, SDPO Bijbehara, students from HSS Zirpara, and representatives of the local chemist fraternity. They highlighted the severe hazards and ill effects of drug abuse and emphasized the collective responsibilities of chemists, civil society, and law enforcement in combating the menace.

Chemists and healthcare providers were sensitized about the warning signs and red-flag indicators of substance abuse, and were urged to remain vigilant in identifying suspicious activities related to addiction. Following the awareness session, all participants took a pledge to fight against drug abuse. A rally comprising students, chemists, and members of civil society was also conducted, starting from Boys Higher Secondary School Bijbehara and culminating at the Town Hall Bijbehara.

Speaking on the occasion, SDPO Bijbehara stressed the need for chemists to work with zeal and commitment for the betterment of society. He urged them to keep a strict vigil on addiction-related activities and report any suspicious behavior to the law enforcement authorities.

Drug Control Officer Anantnag emphasized the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in eradicating drug and substance abuse. He also directed chemists to dispense pharmaceutical preparations with addiction liability strictly in accordance with valid, signed prescriptions from registered medical practitioners. Drug Control Officers from Kokernag and Pahalgam also addressed the gathering and shared valuable insights and suggestions, reinforcing the collective approach needed to curb the drug menace.

SHOPIAN: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Shopian celebrated International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today at District Court Complex Shopian. The programme was held under the supervision of Chairman DLSA Shopian, Mehmood Ahmad Chowdhary.

  • DLSA Bandipora celebrates International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

BANDIPORA: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Bandipora, in coordination with Tehsil Legal Services Committee (TLSC) Bandipora and in collaboration with the District Judiciary, Bandipora and District Bar Association Bandipora observed International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today at ADR Centre District Court Complex Bandipora.

The theme for this year is "Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime," emphasizing the significance of focused long-term action to break the cycle of organized crime and drug trafficking.

The programme was held under the supervision of Khalil Ahmad Choudhary, Chairman DLSA (Pr. District & Sessions Judge) Bandipora and able guidance of Sheikh Babar Hussain, Secretary DLSA Bandipora and Amandeep Singh, Chairman TLSC (Munsiff/JMIC) Bandipora.

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a global call to action against the rising menace of drug abuse and illegal trafficking. The United Nations General Assembly designated this day to raise awareness and promote global action against drug abuse and trafficking.

Abid Hussain Malla, Assistant LADC of DLSA Bandipora highlighted the importance of awareness and collective action to combat this menace. He emphasized the role of schemes like NALSA DAWN - Drug Awareness and Wellness Navigation for a Drug-Free India, which aims to educate people about the ill effects of drug abuse and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Moreover, Khalil Ahmad Choudhary, Pr. District and Sessions Judge Bandipora headed the rally, which was organized by DLSA Bandipora in collaboration with District Bar Association Bandipora.

The participants taking part in the rally raised placards highlighting messages like “#SayNotoDrugsYesToLife, #DrugsFreeIndia, #YuddhNasheKeVirudh, #NashaMuktBharat, #NopeToDope”.

  • International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed in Kupwara

KUPWARA: School Education department Kupwara in collaboration with district administration Kupwara today organized a well attended function at GDC Boys Kupwara to observe the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event was organized as a part of the nationwide Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drug-Free India Campaign).

The function was attended by Principal, Government Degree College Kupwara, Dr. Abdul Rashid Malik; Chief Education Officer Kupwara, Mehraj-U-Din Shah; ACR Kupwara, Peerzada Mumtaz Ahmad; District Education Planning Officer, ZEO Kupwara, ZEPO, besides, youth and students in large number and other concerned stakeholders were also present. 

CEO Kupwara delivered the inaugural address and emphasized the pivotal role of youth in eradicating the menace of drug abuse from the society to live a dignified and peaceful life. He urged upon the students to act as ambassadors of the anti-drug awareness campaign in the district to sensitize the people about the ill effects of drug abuse in the society.

Principal GDC, ACR, DEPO and several other speakers, shared their insights and motivational messages aligned with the objectives of the campaign. They delivered speeches with regard to the role and responsibilities of teachers and parents and other responsible stakeholders in eradicating the drug menace from the society. 

They laid stress upon the sharing of collective responsibility to save our future from this drug menace. Two thought-provoking skits on drug abuse and its social implications were performed by students from Government Middle School Anderhama and Green Land Educational Institute Hyhama. Meanwhile, International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was also observed in various educational institutions across district Kupwara.
