NEW DELHI: Sat Sharma, President, J&K BJP and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), raised a serious concern in the Rajya Sabha in New Delhi regarding the alarming rise in bovine smuggling, terming it a grave challenge not only to law and order in Jammu & Kashmir but also to the social fabric and national security.

Raising the issue in the zero hour, Sat Sharma highlighted that the increasing incidents of bovine smuggling in Jammu & Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region, have reached a critical stage. He emphasized that this illegal activity is no longer confined to petty criminals but has evolved into a well-organized network of smugglers operating with sophisticated methods, including the use of illegal routes, forged permits, and aggressive tactics to evade law enforcement agencies.

Citing official data from Jammu & Kashmir Police, Sat Sharma informed the House that during the year 2024 alone, under “Operation Kamdhenu,” a total of 425 bovine smugglers were arrested and 3,434 animals were rescued from their clutches. While appreciating the vigilance and efficiency of the police forces, he noted that these figures simultaneously reflect the alarming scale at which this illegal trade is flourishing.

Sat Sharma further stated that the unchecked growth of such organized crime poses a serious threat to societal harmony and has the potential to impact national security. He stressed that the issue must not be viewed merely as a regional concern but as a matter of national importance requiring urgent attention.

Calling for decisive action, Sat Sharma urged the Central Government to undertake immediate, concrete, and multi-dimensional interventions to curb this menace. He strongly advocated for the strict implementation of a “zero tolerance” policy against bovine smuggling networks to dismantle the organized mafia involved in such activities.

Reaffirming his commitment to safeguarding law and order and preserving the social harmony of Jammu & Kashmir, Sat Sharma expressed confidence that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government will take firm and effective measures to address this growing challenge and ensure stringent action against those involved in this illegal trade.
