JAMMU: In continuation of the ongoing Phase-II of the Swachhta Internship Programme, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today organized specialized health and hygiene sessions for female students at Government Girls High School, City Chowk and Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Bazar Qasaban. The sessions were led by Health Officer JMC, Dr.Shahid Hussain, who delivered comprehensive lectures focusing on menstrual hygiene management, physical well-being and breaking social stigmas.
The day's program started with a detailed discussion on maintaining proper personal hygiene during menstruation to prevent infections and promote overall health among adolescent girls. Dr.Shahid Hussain spoke at length about the various myths and misconceptions that traditionally surround menstruation in society, encouraging the students to reject unscientific taboos and view it as a natural biological process. The lecture also addressed crucial medical aspects, including common irregularities in periods, advising the students on when to seek medical guidance and how proper nutrition plays a role in regulating their cycles.
A major focus of the session was the environmental and sanitary aspect of waste management, specifically the safe disposal of used sanitary pads. The Health Officer demonstrated the correct methods to wrap and dispose of menstrual waste safely to maintain community sanitation and prevent the clogging of drainage systems. Students were reminded of the practical use of color-coded dustbins, particularly the red dustbin designated for sanitary waste, which is a key component of the source segregation curriculum taught during this internship.
The Swachhata Internship Programme is a structured month-long capacity-building campaign initiated by the Jammu Municipal Corporation under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0. By integrating critical health and menstrual hygiene workshops into the environmental curriculum, the initiative aims to provide holistic education to the youth. The collaborative efforts of the JMC administrative teams and school authorities ensure that these young students are fully equipped with the knowledge to bring positive health, hygiene and sanitation transformations to their homes and surrounding communities.
