- Saroori expresses deep grief over loss of lives, appeals to Congress workers to extend all-out support to affected families and administration
KISHTWAR: A catastrophic cloudburst has wreaked havoc in Chositi, a remote high-altitude village in the Paddar region of Kishtwar district, leaving several people dead, sweeping away homes, and causing large-scale destruction. The tragedy has prompted strong appeals for swift and comprehensive relief efforts.
Senior Congress leader and former Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, G.M. Saroori, today expressed profound grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the devastating cloudburst that struck Chositi village in the Paddar area of district Kishtwar. The sudden cloudburst triggered massive flash floods that tore through the village, sweeping away several houses and damaging many others beyond repair. The calamity has left scores of families homeless and in urgent need of assistance.
In his condolence message, Saroori conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. Calling the incident a “grave human tragedy,” he urged the district administration and disaster management agencies to accelerate the pace of relief and rescue operations, ensuring that stranded villagers receive immediate medical aid, food supplies, and temporary shelter.
The former Congress J&K vice president also appealed to party leaders, workers, and volunteers to remain on the ground, assist in evacuation efforts, help in distributing essential supplies, and work in close coordination with the administration to mitigate the suffering of affected residents.
According to officials, rescue teams comprising SDRF, police, and local volunteers have been mobilized and are working under challenging conditions due to the rough terrain and ongoing bad weather. The full extent of damage is still being assessed, but initial reports suggest significant loss to property, livestock, and infrastructure, alongside the tragic loss of human lives. Relief camps have been set up in safer locations, and priority is being given to restoring connectivity to the cut-off areas.
