JAMMU: The Directorate of Internal Quality Assurance (DIQA), University of Jammu, organised a two-day workshop on “IPR Unlocked: From Concepts to Creation” on September 16-17, 2026, as part of its initiative to strengthen Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) awareness and research commercialisation capabilities among faculty members.
The workshop marked Phase-I of the series of capacity-building initiatives, with similar programmes proposed for faculty members of the University in subsequent phases. The present workshop was conceived as a structured capacity-building initiative for the University’s newly recruited permanent faculty, aimed at equipping them with a working understanding of Intellectual Property and practical skills required to protect and commercialise the outcomes of their research.
The broader objective of the series is to institutionalise IPR awareness and competence across the University so that faculty members develop the knowledge and skills required to identify, protect and translate research outcomes into tangible intellectual property assets, thereby strengthening the University’s innovation and research commercialisation ecosystem.
The workshop focused on developing a clear conceptual understanding of IPR, including patents, copyrights, trademarks and designs, besides imparting practical knowledge of the IPR filing and protection process. It also aimed at enabling faculty members to identify patentable outcomes from their research, understand pathways for commercialisation and technology transfer, and become familiar with institutional support mechanisms available for IP protection.
The workshop was held under the patronage of Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, whose vision of developing a research-intensive and innovation-driven university continues to shape the academic agenda of the institution. Prof. Rai has consistently emphasised the need to provide faculty members with the necessary facilities, exposure and knowledge resources to enable them to convert classroom scholarship and research into patentable innovations, technology transfer opportunities and socially relevant solutions.
The initiative reflects this vision and is closely aligned with the University’s larger objective of strengthening its research output, improving its national and international rankings and building a robust intellectual property culture on the campus in sync with the mandate of the National Education Policy 2020, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
Welcoming the participants, Dr. Ginny Dogra, Director, DIQA said quality assurance in higher education today was inseparable from research productivity and innovation. Dr. Dogra, who spearheaded the conceptualisation and execution of the workshop, urged the newly inducted faculty members to view themselves not merely as teachers but also as knowledge creators and actively contribute to the growth of the University through patents, publications, consultancy and collaborative research.
She further said DIQA would continue to design targeted interventions aimed at translating institutional policy into measurable academic outcomes. On the first day of the workshop, Prof. Jitender Manhas, University of Jammu, delivered a session on “IPR and Idea Creation”, explaining the conceptual foundations of intellectual property, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, designs, geographical indications and trade secrets.
The second day featured an intensive hands-on training module on Patent Filing Procedure conducted by Dr. Mandeep Singh, Assistant Professor, University of Jammu. Participants were taken through the complete life cycle of a patent application, including prior art and patent landscape searching, drafting of provisional and complete specifications, framing of claims, statutory forms, e-filing on the Indian Patent Office portal, publication, examination, response to the First Examination Report and grant.
The practical, terminal-based format enabled participants to work through actual filing workflows, helping demystify a process often perceived as complex and inaccessible to first-time applicants. Dr. Aubid Hussain Parrey, Policy Incharge, IPR Cell, University of Jammu, also delivered a brief presentation on the University’s IPR Policy and explained the methodology and institutional mechanism for filing patents through the University of Jammu, J&K. A total of 24 newly appointed permanent Assistant Professors from various teaching departments of the University participated in the workshop with sustained enthusiasm.
The workshop concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Er. Ameet Targotra, Assistant Director, DIQA and all participants expressed their appreciation for the timeliness and practical orientation of the programme.
