JAMMU: The Faculty of Mathematical Science, University of Jammu, organized an Induction Program for the newly admitted students of the Five-Year Integrated UG- PG Program in Mathematical Science today. The program, which marks the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the first batch of this newly launched interdisciplinary course, was held in the presence of distinguished academicians and university officials.
The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Umesh Rai, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his inaugural address, Prof. Rai congratulated the students for being part of this pioneering initiative under the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences. Prof. Rai complimented the faculty for launching an innovative and forward-looking initiative that truly reflects the spirit of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Addressing the newly admitted students, he said that the programme embodies the essence of experiential and problem-solving education, encouraging learners to move beyond rote learning towards knowledge that emerges through practice and observation. Quoting Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Prof. Rai underlined that true education begins when curiosity replaces conditioning and learning extends beyond textbooks. He emphasized that knowledge must translate into meaningful work and innovation, and that students should cultivate a mindset of exploration rather than memorization.
Prof. Rai urged the faculty to design an activity-based, dynamic curriculum that adapts with student feedback and remains relevant to evolving challenges. He noted that the programme’s interdisciplinary approach—spanning mathematics, statistics, computer science, and allied areas—will equip students with computational, analytical, and communication skills essential for employability and holistic development.
Stressing that education should be an enjoyable pursuit rather than a burden, he encouraged students to discover their passion, develop problem-solving abilities, and engage actively in initiatives that celebrate the region’s cultural diversity.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs highlighted the academic rigor and interdisciplinary approach of the program, emphasizing that the Faculty of Mathematical Science is committed to providing an intellectually stimulating environment that encourages innovation and collaboration. He advised students to focus on building analytical and computational skills that are essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world.
Prof. Sangeeta Gupta, Dean Planning and Development, in her address described the newly introduced five-year Integrated Programme in Mathematical Sciences as more than an academic initiative, calling it a “model for higher education” that blends Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics into a unified learning experience. She noted that this integration would enable students to understand the relationship among the three disciplines and move beyond the conventional view of Mathematics as merely numbers and equations.
Prof. Vibhakar Mansotra, Head Department of Computer Sciences & IT addressed the students on the growing importance of computational methods, programming skills, and data analytics in solving real-world problems. He underscored the role of technology and computer-based modelling in expanding the frontiers of mathematical research and its applications.
Earlier, welcoming the newly admitted students, Prof. Romesh Sharma, Head, Department of Mathematics and Dean, Faculty of Mathematical Science, briefed them about the objectives, structure, and curriculum of the program. He explained that the Five-Year Integrated Master’s Degree Program aims to provide a seamless blend of theoretical and applied knowledge across mathematical disciplines, ensuring that students gain both depth and breadth in their understanding of mathematical sciences.
The formak vote of thanks was delivered by Prof K. S. Charak.
During the induction program, the newly admitted students were familiarized with the syllabus, examination scheme, and academic policies of the program. They were also introduced to various central facilities of the University, including the library, sports complex, gymnasium, health centre, and student welfare services. The orientation helped the students understand the academic ecosystem of the University and the support mechanisms available to them throughout their studies.
In today’s data-driven world, the integration of mathematical modelling, statistical inference, and computational techniques is crucial for addressing complex real-world problems. From fintech and bioinformatics to climate modelling and social network analysis, Mathematical Sciences form the backbone of modern technologies. The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Big Data, and Data Analytics has created an urgent demand for professionals who possess both domain-specific coding skills and a deep conceptual understanding of core mathematical and computational techniques. To meet this demand, the University of Jammu introduced a Five-Year Integrated Master’s Programme in Mathematical Sciences, offering a robust foundation in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. This interdisciplinary programme is designed to prepare students for careers in AI, ML, Data Analytics, Scientific Computing, and Algorithmic Problem Solving.
The Programme aims to bridge the gap between theory and application, fostering a new generation of scholars and professionals equipped with mathematical and computational abilities and critical thinking to tackle future challenges in academia, research, and industry. The induction program concluded with an interactive session, where students shared their aspirations and enthusiasm for the new course. Faculty members encouraged them students to maintain curiosity, discipline, and a passion for learning throughout their academic journey.
The event was attended by Prof Kamal Misra from Kolkata University, Prof. Rahul Gupta, Prof. Lalitsen Sharma, Prof. Pawanesh Kumar Abrol, Prof. Pawan Kumar, Prof. Parmil Kumar, Dr. Shubhnandan Jamwal,Dr. Shallu Sharma, Dr. Tirth Ram,Dr. Sarika Verma Sh. Jasbir Singh, Dr. Vijay K Shivgotra, Dr. Sunil Kumar, Dr. Manish Kumar, Dr. Tarun Kumar Chauhan. The staff from all three departments were also present on the occasion.
