JAMMU: Welcoming the sweeping changes approved by the GST Council, BJP’s senior leader and spokesperson Dr Tahir Chowdhary on Thursday said the reforms will directly benefit households and small businesses in Jammu and Kashmir by reducing the tax burden on daily-use items. He said the decision to cut GST rates on essentials like roti, paratha, milk products, hair oil, soaps, and consumer goods will ease the pressure of rising costs for ordinary families.
“This is a people-centric reform. The BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown once again that the welfare of the common man is its top priority,” Dr Chowdhary said. The BJP leader noted that Jammu and Kashmir’s middle-class families, youth and working professionals would also benefit from the exemption of GST on health and life insurance policies.
“This will encourage more people to come under the insurance net without worrying about extra costs,” he said. Chowdhary added that rationalising the tax structure from four slabs to two would make compliance easier for traders and shopkeepers in the Union Territory. “Small traders in Jammu and Kashmir, who were earlier struggling with complicated slabs, will now find GST simpler and more transparent,” he said.
Dr Chowdhary further stressed that cheaper cement, two-wheelers, and household appliances would also give a boost to local construction activity and consumer demand. “This reform is not just about taxation, it’s about growth, jobs and relief for the common man,” he added.
