AWANTIPORA: The Rumi Library of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) organised a workshop titled “Re-imagining Libraries: From Shelves to Screens in an AI-driven World”, bringing together academicians and library professionals from IUST and various colleges across the Valley to deliberate on the evolving role of libraries in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Vice Chancellor IUST, Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, underscored the importance of AI literacy among students and teachers and called for greater efforts to equip academic communities with an understanding of emerging digital technologies. Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Sheikh Ajaz Bashir, emphasised the need for academic libraries to evolve in response to changing patterns of information access and to provide students and researchers with relevant digital resources and services.
Registrar IUST, Prof. Shameem Ahmad Shah, highlighted the growing shift towards digital resources and stressed the importance of embracing emerging technologies to make libraries more accessible, responsive and effective centres of academic learning and research. Prof. Sangita Gupta, Head, DLIS and Dean, Planning & Development, University of Jammu, highlighted the growing access to information through AI and open-access resources, emphasising the role of libraries in bridging the digital divide and promoting ethical use of technology.
The workshop was attended by prominent library professionals, faculty members, researchers, scholars and students, including Dr. Rajesh Singh, University Librarian, University of Delhi; Dr. Nabi Hassan, University Librarian, IIT Delhi; Prof. Sameer Gull and Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Lone, University of Kashmir; Dr. Nazir Ahmad Bhat, Central University of Kashmir and Dr Sheikh Shueb, Incharge Librarian Rumi Library.A series of technical sessions were also conducted. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Saleeq Ahmad Dar.
