KUPWARA: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan today chaired the meeting of District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) to review the implementation of road safety measures and traffic regulation in the district. Addressing the meeting, the DC said that the road safety is a major issue which concerns to the safety of lives of the people travelling on the roads and urged upon all the stakeholders to cooperate in making the roads safer by following traffic rules and regulations religiously.

She stressed upon the officers to intensify the enforcement of traffic regulations on the ground and tighten the noose on offenders to avert the possibility of road accidents in the district which result in losing the precious lives. ARTO and Traffic Police in coordination with CEO Kupwara were asked to intensify road safety awareness campaign in the schools during the academic session.

It was stated that  children who are vulnerable to traffic accidents will be sensitized about proper behavior to be followed on road especially while boarding and deboarding the school bus or any vehicle. Besides, awareness about wearing helmets shall be also be given a special focus. SE R&B was directed to ensure curve improvement on major roads of the district especially hilly roads to remove the black spots which are prone to accidents. 

Executive Engineers were directed to make sufficient measures for proper patching and repairing of the main and inner roads across the district to ensure smooth movement of both vehicles and pedestrians. BEACON department was directed to ensure installation of proper signages on their roads especially on blind curves to avert accidents related to vehicle collision besides Handwara-Baramulla highway which is the major inter district road of Kupwara.

Earlier, it was informed that 779 challans were imposed by the MVD Kupwara since August last year, realizing fine of Rs.12.46 lakh.  Meanwhile, 15000 challans were also imposed by the Traffic Police during last 2.5 months, since the conduct of last DRSC meeting, realizing fine of Rs.17.96 lakh. The meeting was attended by SE R&B Department Kupwara, CMO, CEO, OC Beacon, Exns  besides, officers from Police, Traffic,  and other concerned officers.
