JAMMU: Raman Suri, Executive Member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has urged the government to enforce a newly introduced directive from the Health Department requiring doctors to write prescriptions using generic medicine names in capital letters, a move designed to protect patient welfare across Jammu and Kashmir. In line with the Indian Medical Council guidelines, this new drug policy mandates that generic names appear on prescriptions to ensure clarity and accuracy in healthcare documentation.
Suri lauded this holistic approach, emphasizing that legibility and precision are essential in every medical document, whether it’s a prescription or a medico-legal report. Suri called on the government to monitor the implementation of this policy rigorously and take strict action against any non-compliance. “It is essential that every doctor follows these guidelines without exception. Regular audits and awareness campaigns will ensure its success, and the BJP remains committed to supporting policies that prioritize the health and well-being of the people,” he stated.
The BJP leader further stressed the need for this policy to be enforced uniformly across all hospitals and healthcare facilities in Jammu and Kashmir, not just in the Jammu division. “This is about accountability. Every doctor, whether in the public or private sector, must comply,” Suri emphasized.
“This decision is a major step forward for patients’ rights,” said Raman Suri. “By writing the generic names in bold, capital letters, doctors will make it easier for patients to understand what has been prescribed, helping to prevent errors and confusion. This will also give patients the ability to purchase medicines at more affordable prices.” The directive aligns with both the Indian Medical Council’s guidelines and the new drug policy, fostering greater transparency and accessibility in healthcare.
Issued by Dr. Rakesh Mangotra, Director of Health Services Jammu, the circular mandates all doctors to write prescriptions using generic names in capital letters. Suri also highlighted that the directive is a significant measure to enhance patient safety and awareness. “This change ensures that patients of all literacy levels can read and comprehend their prescriptions.
The inclusion of generic names will provide them with cost-effective alternatives, reducing the financial burden of healthcare,” he added. Additionally, the circular requires doctors to include details about the patient’s condition alongside the prescribed medication, helping to bridge the communication gap between healthcare providers and patients. The directive also applies to medico-legal reports, ensuring clarity and standardization in all medical documents.
