- Community-Level Health through Local Health Centre for Controlling BP and Diabetes
JAMMU: AIIMS Jammu, organised a Yoga and Health Awareness Camp at Birpur with the objective of promoting preventive healthcare and enhancing community awareness on the management of hypertension (BP) and diabetes under the ICMR Project.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sitikantha Banerjee, Asstt. Professor Community Medicine and PI, ICMR Jammu Incharge with his team stated that lifestyle-related diseases such as BP and diabetes are increasing rapidly; however, they can be effectively controlled through regular health check-ups, yoga, balanced diet, and timely medical intervention. He emphasised the need to strengthen services at the local health centre level to ensure early detection and continuous care.
Sushil Singh Charak Social activist Jammu & Kashmir highlighted the importance of systematic, ground-level health monitoring. He said that people should regularly visit their nearest health centres and actively participate in health camps so that accurate data regarding BP and diabetes patients—such as current readings, treatment status, and recovery progress—can be maintained.
“This system will help healthcare workers track how many patients are under treatment and how many have shown improvement,” he added. During the camp, yoga sessions were conducted by trained instructor from AIIMS Jammu, and participants were educated about preventive measures, early diagnosis, and lifestyle modifications for effective management of BP and diabetes. Local residents welcomed the initiative and termed it a meaningful step towards building a healthier community.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sanjolly Gupta, Coordinator, who appreciated the efforts of AIIMS Jammu, ICMR, healthcare professionals, and community members for their active participation. The event reaffirmed the commitment of AIIMS Jammu and ICMR towards strengthening community-based preventive healthcare initiatives.
