JAMMU: The Two-Day National Seminar on Shulba Sūtras, organized by the Department of Sanskrit, University of Jammu, successfully concluded today in the Department’s seminar hall. The seminar had commenced on 06 February 2026 with a ceremonial Yagya, with Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Umesh Rai as Chief Host and Chairman of the inaugural session.

On the second day, two parallel sessions were conducted, one in online mode and the other offline. The online session was addressed by Prof. Daya Shankar Tiwari from the Department of Sanskrit, University of Delhi, as the Keynote Speaker. A renowned expert in Vedic Mathematics, he explained the technical aspects of the Shulba Sūtras, including the construction of Yagyashalas, design of Yagya Kunds, precise measurements, and the calculation of bricks required for different types of Kunds. He also emphasized the need to strengthen research in Vedic Mathematics and Statistics and encouraged greater scholarly engagement with classical texts such as Aryabhatiya, Ektrinshika and other works related to Shulba and Kalpa Sūtras. The online session was chaired by Prof. Girish Chandra Pant, Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Jamia Millia Islamia University.

Several distinguished scholars presented their research papers in the online session, including Dr. Sapna Chandel (Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla), Prof. Chandrakanta Rai (Varanasi), Dr. Lata Devi (H.P. University, Shimla), Dr. Pratibha Arya (Allahabad University), Dr. Sarvesh (Dayanand Vedic College), Dr. Koshika Sharma (Directorate of Hindi, University of Jammu), Dr. Om Parkash (GCW Udhampur), Dr. Sunil Dutt (GDC Kathua Boys), along with other eminent scholars from various universities and colleges.

The offline session was held in the Kshemendra Sabhagar of the Department and was chaired by Prof. Ram Raj Upadhyay. In this session, Prof. Hari Narayan Tiwari, Prof. Pryag Narayan Mishra, Prof. Bahrat Bhushan Mishra, Prof. Bharat Bhushan Sharma, Dr. Purshottam Pal Singh, and other scholars from the Department and University presented their research findings.

More than 100 participants from the University of Jammu and institutions across India actively took part in the Yagya, inaugural session, and valedictory function of the seminar.

Prof. Bharat Bhushan Mishra, Head of the Jyotish Department, Central Sanskrit University, Bhopal Campus, attended as Special Guest, while Prof. Pryag Narayan Mishra was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Ram Bahadur, Head, Department of Sanskrit, University of Jammu and Coordinator of the seminar, presented a comprehensive report of the event. He highlighted forthcoming academic activities of the Department and reiterated its commitment to promoting Sanskrit scholarship. 

The valedictory session included a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Vidyadhar Singh, followed by reflections from Ph.D. research scholars who shared their learning experiences and insights gained during the seminar. The event concluded with the recitation of the Shanti Path.
