SHAHID AHMED HAKLA POONCHIWe live in a world that is always rushing forward—chasing bigger goals, better opportunities, and greater recognition. In that constant race, it is easy to forget to pause and appreciate what we already have. Gratitude, though simple in nature, holds the power to change the way we see our lives. It teaches us to value the blessings around us, to stay hopeful during challenges, and to remain grounded in moments of success. When gratitude becomes a way of life, everything begins to feel richer, more meaningful, and more peaceful.

  • Recognising the Blessings of the Almighty

At the centre of gratitude is the understanding that everything we enjoy—every breath, every sunrise, every chance to begin again—is a gift from the Almighty. We take many blessings for granted until life reminds us of their true value. Only when illness arrives do we understand the worth of health. Only when difficulties appear do we recognise the comfort of stability. Only when heartbreak or loneliness touches us do we realise the importance of the people we love.

When we stop for a moment and genuinely notice these blessings, we begin to see life differently. A grateful heart finds calm even in storms and strength even in struggle. It keeps us humble when life is generous and patient when life is challenging. Gratitude deepens faith, and faith brings hope that tomorrow can always be better.

  • Honouring the Silent Sacrifices of Parents

If there is anyone who deserves our lifelong gratitude, it is our parents. From our first day in this world, their journey becomes intertwined with ours. They give up sleep to comfort us, put aside their own needs to provide for us, and stand quietly behind us as we learn to walk the path of life. Many of their sacrifices remain unseen—they endure stress, fear, and hardship without ever letting it show, always putting our happiness before their own.

In a generation that glorifies independence, it is easy to forget the shoulders upon which we stand. Expressing gratitude to parents does not require grand gestures. A gentle tone, a few minutes of conversation, a warm hug, or simply saying “Thank you” can carry immeasurable meaning. When we honour and respect our parents, we strengthen the very foundation of our society, because families built on love and gratitude become communities built on harmony.

  • Looking Beyond Ourselves: Seeing What We Often Miss

There are days when life feels unfair—when we feel defeated, unlucky, or unsatisfied. In those moments, gratitude invites us to look beyond our own struggles and notice the lives of those who have far less. Millions of people across the world live without basic necessities—clean water, safe homes, education, medical care, or daily meals. Yet many among them continue to fight with courage, humility, and hope.

When we see their strength, we are reminded of how fortunate we truly are. Instead of thinking, “I don’t have enough,” we begin to realise, “I have more than many others dream of.” This shift opens our hearts and teaches us not only to be grateful, but also to be generous and socially responsible. Gratitude grows when we recognise what we have rather than focusing on what we lack.

  • Appreciating the People Who Support Us Every Day

None of us succeed alone. Throughout life, we are guided, supported, and shaped by countless individuals—teachers who inspire us, friends who lift us up, mentors who guide our thinking, and colleagues who work alongside us. And beyond these, there are many who quietly hold society together: farmers, labourers, cleaners, drivers, nurses, and countless others whose hands touch our lives even if we never see their faces.

Sometimes we forget to acknowledge them simply because we’re used to their service. But a simple smile, a sincere thank you, or even a moment of respect can make someone feel seen and valued. When appreciation becomes part of our daily behaviour, society becomes kinder, relationships strengthen, and the walls between people begin to disappear.

  • Staying Humble: The Heart of Gratitude

True gratitude naturally leads to humility. It reminds us that no matter what we achieve or how far we go, we did not do it alone. Every success is built on someone’s support, someone’s prayer, someone’s guidance, or someone’s sacrifice. Humility teaches us to listen more, judge less, and respect everyone we meet—regardless of their role or status.

In a time when ego and competition often overshadow kindness, humility is a quiet strength. It keeps us grounded when success arrives and steady when challenges come. Humble people do not need to announce their greatness; their actions speak for them. They inspire others not through authority, but through sincerity and respect.

  • Cultivating Gratitude in Everyday Life

Gratitude does not require perfection or wealth—it simply requires awareness. It begins with small daily habits: pausing to notice what is good rather than what is missing, saying thank you with meaning, appreciating someone’s effort instead of assuming it, and replacing complaints with understanding. When we practice gratitude consistently, it becomes part of who we are. It changes the tone of our conversations, strengthens relationships, and brightens even difficult days.

The more we choose gratitude, the more reasons we find to be grateful.

  • The Foundation of a Kinder World

Gratitude is more than a pleasant idea—it is a way of living that builds stronger individuals, more loving families, and a more compassionate society. When we thank the Almighty for His blessings, honour our parents for their sacrifices, recognise those who support us, stay humble in our achievements, and remember those less fortunate than us, we strengthen the moral fabric of our nation.

As we move forward in a fast-paced and often divided world, let us choose gratitude over complaint, humility over pride, and kindness over indifference.

Gratitude costs nothing, yet it has the power to change everything.

“A grateful heart builds a peaceful life. A grateful society builds a stronger nation.”
