JAMMU: The Department of Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing EIACP Hub, Jammu & Kashmir, organised an awareness campaign to mark National Remote Sensing Day celebrated annually on AUGUST 12, at Eco-Vista, Raika Park, Jammu. The event featured a keynote lecture by Dr A S Jasrotia, Head, Department of Remote Sensing, University of Jammu, on the topic "Applications of GIS". Dr Vikram Sarabhai, the father of Indian Space Programme, was remembered and his achievements highlighted.

The programme commenced with a plantation drive involving students from Government College for Women Parade, Jammu, who were accompanied by Dr Harman, Head, Department of Environmental Science. Dr Rajan, Coordinator, JKDEERS-EIACP, formally welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr A S Jasrotia, along with Dr Harman.

In his talk, Dr Jasrotia highlighted key applications of Geographic Information Systems, including disaster management, environmental monitoring, urban planning, natural resource mapping and climate change analysis. He emphasised how GIS supports evidence-based decision-making and sustainable development.

The event witnessed active participation from around 60 individuals, including students, teachers and DEERS-EIACP staff, reflecting the growing interest in geospatial technologies among youth and academia. Dr Rajan, Coordinator, JKDEERS-EIACP, appreciated the students for their participation and also emphasised the importance of GIS in our daily lives.
