- Awareness event held at Environment Park Raika
JAMMU: An inspiring Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) awareness event, coupled with the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the flagship initiative “Tree Talk,” was successfully organized at the Environment Park by the Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing (DEERS), EIACP J&K Hub.
The event was graced by eminent dignitaries including B M Sharma, Principal Secretary Department of Culture, Jammu & Kashmir; Virinder Singh Bhou Principal District & Sessions Judge Udhampur; O. P. Sharma Tree Talk Crusader and Retired PCCF; Rajesh Kumar ISS Regional Passport Officer; Nagender Singh Jamwal Special Secretary and Pradeep Chandra Wahule CF East.
Additionally, participants from diverse segments of civil society attended the programme, including trainees from Kashmir Forest Training School Chitternar- Bandipora, representatives of NGOs, environmentalists and officials from the government departments, reflecting a strong multi-stakeholder engagement for environmental conservation.
The session proved to be highly enlightening and inspirational. Detailed deliberations were held on local foods and indigenous tree species of Jammu & Kashmir, with special emphasis on their ecological, cultural, and medicinal significance. Experts shared valuable insights on traditional knowledge systems and the role of native biodiversity in ensuring food security, health, and climate resilience.
Adding a unique experiential dimension to the event, food delicacies prepared from forest-derived resources were showcased and served to the participants, underscoring the sustainable use of forest produce and promoting local, nature-based diets aligned with the ethos of Mission LiFE.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rajan Singh, ESC, DEERS, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, participants, organizers, and supporting staff for making the event a meaningful success and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to spreading environmental awareness and strengthening community participation in conservation.
