SAMBA: EIACP J&K Hub, Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, Government of J&K organized an enlightening program to commemorate the International Day of Climate Action at Government Degree College (GDC) Samba.
The event commenced with a welcome address by the College Principal Dr. Meeru Abrol, who highlighted the pressing need to understand and act upon the challenges posed by climate change at both global and regional levels. The program featured guest lectures by Dr. Kuljit Kour and Dr. Padma Sharma, Project Scientist, NMSHE DEERS.
Dr. Kuljit Kour discussed the serious consequences of climate change, referring to local examples such as the Kishtwar cloudburst and other recent natural calamities in Jammu & Kashmir.
Dr. Padma Sharma elaborated on the role of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and explained how national and international policy decisions are guided by scientific assessments of climate change.
A symposium competition was also organized on the theme “From Snow to Scarcity: Water Resources of J&K”. The competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, reflecting their awareness and concern for the region’s environmental challenges. The winners of the symposium were Ritakshi (1st Prize) Danish (2nd Prize) and Jyoti (3rd Prize).
The program was graced by several distinguished guests, including Dr. Rajan Singh, Coordinator, EIACP J&K Hub (Chief Guest); Anil Sharma, Range Officer; Dr. Kirti Joshi, Program Officer, DEERS EIACP and Nitin Sharma, IT & GIS Officer.
