JAMMU: Synergetic Green Warriors Foundation (SGWF) marked World Rangers Day with a heartfelt ceremony, led by Dr. Sonia Verma, the Director of SGWF. In her speech, Dr. Verma paid homage to the forest rangers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in their commitment to protecting our forests and wildlife.
She particularly remembered the 11 brave officers from the Uttarakhand Forest Department who lost their lives while combating forest fires. To honor their memory, a two-minute moment of silence was observed, recognizing these green unsung heroes, often referred to as the lesser-known khaki. On World Ranger Day, the international ranger community stops to recognise the critical role that the ranger profession plays in maintaining life on earth.
If it were not for rangers unwavering commitment and passion for conservation, many species would already be extinct, and our ecosystems in a more degraded and perilous state than they currently are. We, as humans, are increasingly experiencing the ramifications of biodiversity loss and our negative impacts on healthy environmental systems. Rangers are, in many cases, putting their lives at risk so that society can enjoy fresh air, fresh water, and a healthy planet.
World Rangers Day, celebrated annually on July 31st, honors the dedication and courage of rangers worldwide, who are on the front lines of conservation. The day also serves as a tribute to rangers who have lost their lives or suffered injuries in the line of duty. It was established by the International Ranger Federation (IRF) to raise awareness about the vital role of rangers in protecting natural and cultural treasures.
