JAMMU: In a vibrant celebration of culture, tradition, and physical well-being, the Udhampur Campus of the University of Jammu successfully organized a one-day trekking expedition to the historic Mahamaya Temple located in Garnai Lotta, Udhampur. The event was designed not only to foster experiential learning and spirituality but also to highlight the immense potential of the Mahamaya Forest and Temple area for sustainable tourism development. The trek through the Mahamaya Forest showcased the area’s rich biodiversity. Developing this area for tourism could focus on nature walks, bird watching, and eco-friendly trekking routes that do not disturb the local ecosystem, thereby promoting environmental conservation alongside economic growth.

The initiative aimed to bridge the gap between physical fitness and the deeper understanding of the Indian Knowledge System, promoting traditional values, spiritual beliefs, and cultural heritage among the student community. The scenic trek through the Mahamaya Forest served as a practical classroom, demonstrating how nature and spirituality coexist in local heritage.

Over 50 students, along with faculty members, participated in the trek, which served as a rejuvenating experience away from the traditional classroom setting. The expedition allowed participants to immerse themselves in nature while exploring the spiritual significance of local shrines that have shaped the region’s cultural landscape for centuries. During the event, students engaged in discussions highlighting the importance of preserving ancient traditions, understanding ecological balance through a spiritual lens, and fostering values of community and resilience.

Highlighting the vision behind this initiative, Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Rector, Udhampur Campus, University of Jammu, in his special message shared that the education is not merely academic; it is about nurturing the soul and connecting with our roots. This trekking expedition to Mahamaya Temple is a bridge between our rich Indian Knowledge System and modern experiential learning. By walking the path to Mahamaya Temple, our students are not just experiencing physical exertion, but are also engaging with the profound wisdom inherent in our Indian Knowledge System. It is vital that we fill our traditional values, beliefs, and cultural ethos into the modern educational framework to develop holistic individuals.

The trek allowed students to engage directly with local traditions and understand the geographical significance of the Udhampur region. This initiative reflects the University’s commitment to holistic development, encouraging students to learn from their surroundings and understand the practical applications of their cultural heritage.

The trekking event was meticulously coordinated by Dr. Ritika Sambyal, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, Udhampur Campus, University of Jammu. The Udhampur Campus remains committed to organizing such immersive experiences that foster intellectual growth alongside cultural awareness and physical wellness.
