SRINAGAR: A book on multidisciplinary science authored by Prof (Dr.) Mohammad Aslam Baba, former Principal & Dean Engineering & Technology, Cluster University Srinagar was launched today at S.P. College Srinagar.
The Book was released by the Prof Mushtaq Ahmad Siddiqi Former Vice Chancellor IUST along with other dignitaries Prof. Syed Ghulam Sarwar Former Principal and Academician, Prof Mohamad Afzal Zargar Registrar Central University of Kashmir, Prof. Nasir Iqbal Registrar University of Kashmir and Prof. Ghulam Jeelani Qureshi Principal S. P. College, Srinagar.
In his speech, Prof Mushtaq deliberated upon the importance of creating awareness among the students to attract them towards the field of science. He appreciated the work of the author for compiling this book in a comprehensive manner. In this academic event eminent administrators and academicians from the universities and colleges were present on the occasion.
Among other speakers Prof. Syed Ghulam Sarwar, Prof Mohammad Afzal Zargar, Prof. Nasir Iqbal Prof. Ghulam Jeelani Qureshi and Prof. Basharat Ahmad Want shared their opinion on the book. Dr. Qadusia Gani presented a brief review of the book.
The book, ‘Development of Science Through Ages’ is divided into two main sections. Section-I deals with, ‘Emergence of Science’ that includes a historical perspective of the developments, contributors and their contributions to science and technology in different epochs, civilizations and communities of the world. A glimpse of Nobel Prize winners in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine, followed by the chronology of major scientific events is presented in this section.
In section-II, few advancements in science including topics on research and development, inventions and discoveries, science policies in India, together with 30 articles on different disciplines of science and technology are discussed briefly. It is hoped that the book will prove a guiding source and reading material for those students who, as per the National Education Policy-2020, pursue multidisciplinary curriculum.
The book is written in simple language, avoiding complex mathematical procedures to give an elementary idea of latest theories and technologies, related to various areas of scientific knowledge, so as to create interest and imbibe scientific temper among the readers. The program was anchored jointly by Dr. Qadusia Gani and Dr. Sameena. The event was concluded with the vote of thanks presented by Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Aslam Baba.
KATHUA: As part of the ongoing efforts to enhance electoral literacy and boost voter participation, a series of impactful events were held today across Kathua district under the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative. These programs were designed to educate students and the public about the importance of voter registration and active participation in the democratic process.
The day commenced with the flagging off of the SVEEP Awareness Mobile Van by the Deputy District Election Officer (Dy. DEO) Nagesh Singh. The van will traverse the district, spreading crucial information about voter registration, electoral participation and the democratic rights of citizens.
At Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Budhi, an election awareness program, focusing on the significance of enrolling in the electoral roll for individuals aged 18 and above was held. Students were encouraged to act as change agents within their communities, promoting the message of electoral participation.
At GHSS Kathera, under the guidance of Principal Chaman Lal, an engaging session was conducted to highlight the importance of voting and the procedures involved in registering as voters. The program aimed to empower students with knowledge and inspire them to participate actively in the electoral process.
At HSS Forelain Kathua, Principal Mangat Ram Sharma spearheaded an initiative that emphasized ensuring no eligible individual is left unregistered. Students were motivated to take an active role in spreading awareness about the importance of voting, both within the school and in their communities.
At Govt HSS Magloor, a comprehensive electoral literacy program was organized under the leadership of Principal Narinder Singh, in alignment with the Second Special Summary Revision. Senior Lecturer in Political Science and BLO Supervisor, Ranjeet Singh, along with the school's Literacy Club, provided in-depth insights into the summary revision process and the necessary documentation for voter registration. Students were urged to encourage recent 12th-grade graduates to register with their respective Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
At GHSS Chandwan, an awareness program focusing on the Second Special Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls was held under the guidance of the school’s principal and BLO of Chandwan Panchayat, Mr. Sandeep Singh. Ms. Neha Gupta informed students about an upcoming voter registration camp scheduled for July 28, 2024, and discussed the importance of completing Form 6 for new voter registration. The program also highlighted the necessary documents required for registration, ensuring that students who have turned 18 years on or before July 1, 2024, are registered as new voters.
Meanwhile Special camps under ongoing Second Special Summary Revision were held in all assembly segments of Kathua district where Booth Level Officers hold camps for registration of news voters besides updating the electoral rolls by taking form 6, 7, 6B and 8 for the purification of electoral records. Pertinently, under ongoing Second Summary Revision Special Camps are being organised on 27 & 28th July and 3-4th August 2024 at all Polling Stations for registration of new voters and correction of data of existing voters.
These initiatives are part of the District Election Cell’s dedication to foster electoral literacy and ensure that every eligible citizen is registered and informed. By targeting educational institutions and engaging students, the district aims to build a foundation of informed and active citizens committed to participating in the democratic process.
JAMMU: Under the patronage of Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh (Patron-in-Chief, J&K Judicial Academy), Tashi Rabstan and guidance of Chairperson, Governing Committee and Members of Governing Committee for J&K Judicial Academy, the J&K Judicial Academy organized two day sensitization programme on “The relevant provisions of BNSS on arrest, remand and bail with special reference to the Role of Trial Judges in ensuring just, fair and speedy trial (as guaranteed under article 21 of the constitution)” at its Jammu Campus, Janipur, Jammu for the Judicial Officers (Sr./Jr. Division) across the Jammu division along with Trainee Civil Judge (Jr. Division) through physical as well as virtual mode.
The training programme was inaugurated by Justice Rahul Bharti, Judge, High Court of J&K and Ladakh as member of the Governing Committee for J&K Judicial Academy, in presence of Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge, High Court of J&K and Ladakh who was the resource person in the opening session of the first day. Delivering his introductory remarks, Justice Rahul Bharti quoted Michaelangelo, an Italian sculptor, who once said "Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to uncover it." He highlighted that ensuring the dignity of an individual is the core of preamble of the constitution of India adding that being sensitive to the litigants we can uplift the society.
Justice Bharti gave various real life illustrations and reiterated that any institution doesn’t have an expiry date whereas what we contribute passes on to the next generation which only keeps the institution flourishing. He also interacted with the participants and elaborated on the purpose of remand including rejection of a remand. He advised the participants to be pro-active rather than passive listeners as individuality of an individual is on stake while undergoing a trial.
On the first day, the first session was chaired by Justice Atul Sreedharan, who in his very opening remarks quoted Former Chief Justice, MP High Court Justice Akil Kureshi and said, “Judges have no personal ambition and you have nothing to fear".
Justice Sreedharan discussed the role and responsibilities of Trial Judges in ensuring strict compliance with the provisions for arrest and remand by assessing independently the necessity to justify such an arrest before granting a remand and not to go simply by the claims of arresting officer as gospel. He discussed various powers and duties of magistrates. He exhorted the judicial officers to adopt a judicial approach and justice must be done in accordance with the law. He further elaborated that speedy trial is a fundamental right implicit in the broader sweep and content of Article 21 of the Constitution.
Justice Sreedharan added that aforesaid Article confers a fundamental right on every person not to be deprived of his life or liberty except in accordance with the procedure prescribed by law and the procedure so prescribed must ensure conclusion of trial within reasonable time frame for determination of the guilt of such person. The session was highly interactive and various aspects of the subject topic were discussed by His Lordship.
Rajinder Saproo, Registrar Rules, High Court of J&K and Ladakh, the resource person in the second session, gave a detailed overview of Provisions of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023(BNSS) governing arrest, remand and Bail. The resource person lay threadbare and discussed various principles governing remand to Police/Judicial Custody and those amended provisions for the benefit of the participants.
He discussed the different remand provisions to be adopted for litigants in special cases like transgender, mother of child of age 6 or below, etc. He explained that Section 479 of BNSS, which is the counter-part of Section 436A CrPC, has brought some crucial changes in the provision granting bail to the undertrial prisoners, such as in early release of first-time offender, and obligation is now cast upon the jail Superintendent to move an application on behalf of the undertrial who completes one half or one-third of the maximum term of the sentence for the offence, as the case maybe, for which he/she is detained.
Y.P. Bourney, Director, J&K Judicial Academy, who will be chairing the session on second day as Resource Person, conducted the proceedings of the two day sensitization programme. All the sessions remained very interactive during which all the participants actively participated and shared their experiences, difficulties and also discussed various aspects of the subject topics. They also raised a number of queries which were answered satisfactorily by the resource persons.

Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu in collaboration with the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce (DICCI), under the aegis of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India, concluded the Eight batch of the Capacity Building Program on Small Business Development Units (SBDUs) on 26th July 2024.
The valedictory ceremony took place at the Srinagar Campus on 26th July 2024, heralding a new chapter in entrepreneurial empowerment. The eight-batch comprised of 30 participants from various parts of the country ranging including individuals from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Among the notable attendees were Dr. G. Kahmei, Program Director, IIM Jammu, Dr. Kulwinder Kaur, Program Director, IIM Jammu, Shri Shahid Jibran, Project Manager, SBDU, IIM Jammu and Shri Naren Karunakaran, Consultant, Centre for Small Business Development, IIM Jammu. Shri Shahid Jibran, Project Manager, SBDU, IIM Jammu, gave an overview of the program, setting the stage for an enriching journey of learning and growth.
The ceremony included the distribution of certificates, followed by the rendition of the national anthem, symbolizing unity and collective aspirations. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, in collaboration with the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI) and under the aegis of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India, successfully concluded a five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) program on Small Business Development Units (SBDUs) from 22nd July 2024 with a grand valedictory ceremony. The valedictory ceremony took place at IIM Jammu's Srinagar Campus.
The primary objective of the ToT programme was to equip trainers from various proposed SBDUs at Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Government Polytechnics with the necessary skills and knowledge to train local entrepreneurs. These SBDUs will serve as district hubs, fostering entrepreneurship and skill development at the grassroots level. The program consisted of 22 participants from different ITIs and polytechnics.
