SRINAGAR: In a significant step towards environmental conservation and clean environment, the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports (YSS), J&K, in collaboration with the 14th Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) G Qay, organized a plantation drive at Wazir Bagh here. The event was held in connection with World Environment Day (WED) 2025, emphasizing the urgent need for ecological preservation and sustainable practices.

The event was graced by Rajinder Singh Tara, Director General of YSS J&K along with Mohammad Rashid Kohili, Joint Director YSS Kashmir and Rajiv Tiwari Assistant Commandant of SSB 14 G Qay Battalion. Senior officials, including the Accounts Officer of YSS, section heads, field staff, and SSB personnel, actively participated in the drive, reinforcing the message of collective responsibility towards nature.

Speaking on the occasion, DG YSS highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship, stating "World Environment Day is not just a symbolic observance but a call to action. Our Department is committed to fostering a culture of sustainability among the youth. Today’s plantation drive is a step towards a greener future, and we urge every citizen, especially our young students, to take ownership of their environment. Small actions, like planting a tree or reducing plastic use, can create a monumental impact."

Echoing similar sentiments, Assistant Commandant SSB 14 G Qay remarked. “The SSB is proud to collaborate with the Department of YSS in this noble initiative. Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility, and such drives strengthen community participation. We must continue to work together to ensure a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations." Similar drives were carried out across the UT at Zonal and District levels by the Department of YSS J&K.

In line with the global theme for WED 2025, Ending Plastic Pollution Globally, the Directorate of YSS had earlier issued directives to all District and Zonal Youth Services & Sports Officers to organize Walkathons, Cyclothond, Plog-runs, Clean-up drives, marathons, plantation drives and awareness campaigns across J&K. The response has been overwhelming, with thousands of students, field officials, and local communities participating in various eco-friendly activities. The event at Wazir Bagh concluded with a pledge to continue such initiatives throughout the year, reinforcing the vision of a plastic-free, green J&K.
