JAMMU: A deputation from Panchayat Hamirpur Nawan, Akhnoor, called on BJP Jammu & Kashmir General Secretary and Former Deputy Mayor, Jammu, Baldev Singh Billawaria, along with Bahu Assembly Constituency MLA Ch. Vikram Randhawa, at the BJP Headquarters, Jammu, to highlight the alarming situation arising from the continuous erosion caused by the Chenab River.
The deputation, led by Rakesh Pant, President, BJP J&K Kisan Morcha, along with District President, BJP Kisan Morcha Purshotam Singh, apprised the leaders that the persistent riverbank erosion has been severely affecting fertile agricultural land, orchards, rural link roads, and both public and private properties in the area. They cautioned that unless timely and effective intervention is undertaken, the situation could pose a serious threat to agriculture, rural infrastructure, and the livelihoods of a large number of farming families.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Rakesh Pant urged the government to accord top priority to the execution of permanent flood protection and anti-erosion works in the affected areas. He emphasised that durable mitigation measures are essential to safeguard farmers’ land, protect rural properties, and preserve critical infrastructure from further damage.Giving a patient and sympathetic hearing to the delegation, Baldev Singh Billawaria assured them that the matter would be vigorously pursued with the concerned departments and competent authorities.
Demonstrating his prompt commitment, he immediately spoke with the Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control Department, apprising him of the gravity of the situation and urging an early technical inspection of the affected sites along with the implementation of necessary flood protection measures.Billawaria stated that the protection of farmers’ land and livelihoods remains a matter of utmost priority. He further informed the delegation that the issue would also be brought to the notice of BJP Jammu & Kashmir President and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Sat Sharma (CA), so that timely intervention at the government level can be ensured and concrete steps towards a permanent solution can be initiated without delay.
Reiterating the party’s commitment to public welfare, Billawaria said that the Bharatiya Janata Party stands firmly with farmers and is dedicated to addressing every genuine public concern. He assured that every possible effort would be made to secure relief for the affected residents and ensure the long-term protection of the region.MLA Ch. Vikram Randhawa remarked that the increasing erosion of the Chenab River is not only endangering valuable agricultural land but also posing a serious challenge to rural infrastructure, connectivity, and the safety of local communities. He stressed that protecting farmers’ hard-earned livelihoods is a top priority and assured the delegation that the matter would be forcefully taken up with the government and the concerned departments to facilitate prompt and effective action.
