JAMMU: Vice President BJP J & K and former minister Priya Sethi today hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for steering the country towards what she described as “the most people-friendly GST reform since its inception.” She said the decisions taken by the GST Council will provide massive relief to households, industries, and farmers alike.
“These reforms reflect the Prime Minister’s vision of making taxation simpler, fairer and truly beneficial for the common citizen,” Sethi said, while addressing mediapersons in Jammu. “From reducing GST on everyday essentials like paneer, chapati, khakra, soaps, shampoos, toothpaste and kitchenware, to giving exemptions on life and health insurance policies, this reform covers every section of society.”
She said the timing of the reforms, effective from September 22, the first day of Navratri, was also symbolic. “The government has chosen the auspicious start of Navratri to give this gift to the people of India. It shows that Prime Minister Modi thinks about families, farmers and the middle class while ensuring that India’s growth momentum continues,” she said.
Praising the GST Council under Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Sethi noted that the new two-slab structure of 5% and 18% would end confusion, reduce litigation, and help businesses plan better. “This simplification is not just a tax adjustment, it is a structural reform that promotes ease of doing business. Labour-intensive sectors like textiles, agriculture inputs and healthcare will benefit immensely,” she said.
She also highlighted the relief provided to the automobile sector. “By lowering GST on small cars and motorcycles, the government has directly helped middle-class families and youth. At the same time, industries now have a predictable framework to grow and create jobs.”
Calling it a “historic milestone,” Sethi said the reforms strengthen the philosophy of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas. “Prime Minister Modi has once again proved that his government stands with the people. These GST reforms are about reducing burden on families, giving confidence to businesses and ensuring that India’s economic journey becomes more inclusive,” she added.
