UDHAMPUR: The Udhampur Campus (Garnai-Lotta), University of Jammu, organized a one-day demonstration-cum-lecture on “Career Opportunities in Art and Photography.” The session featured Colonel Sudeshwar Sharma as the expert speaker and Prof. Sanjana Koul, Director, School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu, as the Chief Guest.
In his enlightening talk on the growing opportunities in photography and art, Col. Sharma, a seasoned officer, described the technical abilities necessary to develop a career, including camera handling, editing, digital tools, and business and marketing understanding. Drawing on his personal experiences, he believed that in addition to advancing one's profession, artistic and photographic abilities support mental fortitude, self-discovery, and the appreciation of nature's abundance. Col Sharma covered a range of career pathways, industry trends, and the influence of digital platforms like social media and NFTs.
He emphasized how crucial it is to have a solid portfolio, network, and take part in exhibitions in order to gain professional recognition. They experimented with several approaches, such as lighting, framing, and composition, which enabled them to translate abstract ideas into real-world knowledge. Students were able to improve their abilities and comprehend the technical subtleties of photography through this interactive part. Col Sharma’s artistic abilities were displayed through an exhibition of paintings and photographs.
With subjects ranging from abstract and contemporary art to environment and culture, the exhibition showcased a wide range of images and paintings. Another highlight of the event was the interaction between the students and the experts on the professional exhibiting techniques used in the exhibitions.
In her remarks, Prof. Sanjana Koul congratulated the faculty and administration for arranging such career-oriented workshops and commended the academic and career-oriented activities being made at the Udhampur Campus. She urged youth to devotedly follow their artistic inclinations and underlined the value of exposing them to a variety of professional options.
Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences and the Rector, Udhampur Campus highlighted the growing importance of photography as an art form and a career, emphasizing its function in narrative, documenting, and creative expression. He also praised the chief guest and the expert for their meaningful contributions during the event. He urged students to choose photography as a career option in the media, advertising, journalism, and the arts. He thanked the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. Umesh Rai, for his support of student-centered and career-oriented events on campus.
Earlier, Dr. Jyoti Sharma extended a warm welcome to the guests, Dr. Jyotishna introduced the expert speaker, and Ms. Taruna Dubey presented the vote of thanks. Faculty and students of School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu, and Udhampur Campus enthusiastically participated in the event, which promoted cross-disciplinary collaboration.
JAMMU: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha today attended the ‘J&K Cultural Festival’ organised by Shri Kailakh Jyotish & Vedic Sansthan Trust at Baba Jitto Auditorium, SKUAST Jammu. The occasion was also graced by Acharya Mahamandleshwar Swami Kailashanand Giri ji Maharaj. In his address, the Lieutenant Governor commended the efforts of Shri Kailakh Jyotish & Vedic Sansthan and everyone associated with the Trust for promoting and propagating the cultural values, and linguistic heritage of Jammu Kashmir.
He said that organizations and individuals must come forward to preserve and spread India’s timeless wisdom and value systems to foster a more harmonious and enlightened society. “Our ancient civilization profoundly influenced the humanity through its rich cultural, intellectual, scientific and spiritual contribution and shaped the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.
“We must bring generations together to preserve, protect and promote our cultural heritage and disseminate ancient wisdom of our civilization. It is also imperative that we devise the various ways in which heritage awareness can be promoted in the society,” the Lieutenant Governor said. The Lieutenant Governor asked the youth, religious organisations and civil society members to focus on preservation of Natural Heritage, Cultural Heritage and Living Heritage.
Besides, prioritising sustainable development, we should follow multidisciplinary approach to preserve our cultural practices, folk arts, traditional crafts and ancient knowledge system, he further said. The Lieutenant Governor emphasised that our Scientists, Artists, and Spiritualists, have an indispensable role to play in realising the vision of Viksit Bharat.
“Concerted efforts involving all the stakeholders are vital for the preservation and promotion of our Heritage”, he said. The Lieutenant Governor further called upon every section, especially the young generation to become the brand ambassadors of sustainable lifestyle and spread awareness in the society about our duties towards Mother Earth.
The event witnessed the felicitation of prominent personalities from diverse fields, and showcasing of a documentary film, and release of a book edited by Mahant Rohit Shastri titled ‘Abhinandan Granth’ on the life of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor. J&K Cultural Festival was aimed at promoting rich cultural heritage, religious traditions, and social unity. During the Fest, exhibition of local handicrafts, traditional cuisines and folk dances were organized.
An exhibition was also organised to showcase the strength and technological advancements of the Armed forces and inspire the youth to join the Army and serve the nation.

JAMMU:J&K Legal Services Authority under the esteemed guidance of Justice Tashi Rabstan, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh (Patron-in-Chief, J&K Legal Services Authority) today convened a virtual meeting with all the Secretaries of District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs), Medical Superintendents of Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) Jammu and Srinagar and Jail Superintendents alongwith Medical Officers of the jails across the UT of J&K and Ladakh.
The objective was to comprehensively review and reinforce the legal aid mechanisms to health care available to inmates in correctional facilities across the region. During the deliberations, special emphasis was placed on the recently inaugurated Legal Aid Clinics at GMCH Jammu and Srinagar, underscoring the need to extend similar facilities to all correctional institutions across the UTs. It was resolved that these Legal Aid Clinics should be fully operationalized with designated Legal Aid Defense Counsels (LADCs) and Para-Legal Volunteers (PLVs) to ensure seamless and timely access to legal assistance for inmates.
To enhance accessibility and outreach, it was further mandated that the contact details of PLVs, Legal Aid Counsel and nodal officers nominated by the GMCH Jammuand Srinagar be prominently displayed in all jails, ensuring that every inmate is aware of their rights and can seek legal assistance without procedural hindrance. This initiative aligns with the broader objective of expediting special medical attention and ensuring the swift resolution of pending legal matters.
Additionally, Jail Superintendents were directed to extend all necessary facilities to avail all benefits of providing the specialized medical treatment from the Legal Aid Clinics available at GMCH Jammu & Srinagar, including specialized medical care, psychological counseling and legal consultationsto inmates, reinforcing the commitment to upholding their fundamental rights, as enshrined in the Constitution of India and international human rights conventions. The Chief Justice reiterated the importance of a coordinated approach involving jail authorities, legal services institutions, and healthcare professionals to ensure the holistic well-being of inmates.
The meeting concluded with a firm commitment from all stakeholders to strengthen legal aid infrastructure across correctional institutions, with continued efforts to enhance Legal Aid Clinics, legal literacy initiatives and rehabilitation programs and health care of jail inmates across the UT of J&K and Ladakh. The J&K Legal Services Authority remains steadfast in its mission to uphold justice, ensure access to legal remedies, and safeguard the dignity and rights of all individuals, particularly those in custody.
JAMMU: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today said that an amount of Rs. 27.07 Cr. has been released to the Srinagar Municipal Committee for installation of street lights. The Chief Minister was replying to a question raised by the Shamim Firdous in the Legislative Assembly.
He informed the House that as per the tripartite agreement between HUDD, JKPDD & EESL, M/s. EESL is maintaining installation along with warranty replacement during the project period of 07 years ending 2027. He further said that the restoration of defunct street lights is carried by the concerned.
JAMMU: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today assured the House that his government remains committed to the development of administrative units created under his previous tenure and will ensure the necessary infrastructure is built over time. Replying to a supplementary question from MLA G.A. Mir, the Chief Minister stated that the construction of the Mini Secretariat Dooru was initiated in 2018 by JKPCC at an estimated cost of Rs. 590 lakh. He informed the House that work has been completed up to the plinth level, and part payments have been made accordingly.
However, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) amounting to Rs. 598.91 lakh was prepared by PWD, but the required Administrative Approval (AA) and Technical Sanction (TS) have not been accorded. “Out of the total estimated cost of Rs. 590 lakh, an amount of Rs. 25 lakh was released under the District Budget 2017-18, which has been utilized against the total work done claims of Rs. 39 lakh. The work has been completed up to the plinth level,” the Chief Minister said.
He further stated that a revised DPR of Rs. 598.91 lakh was prepared by PWD in 2021, but it requires reassessment in line with the latest Schedule of Rates (SoRs), considering the impact of cost escalation. A final decision will be taken once this reassessment is completed.
