NEW DELHI: The Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-Delhi) has been granted a patent by the Indian Patent Office for its invention titled 'A System with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface for Wireless Communication and a Method of Operation Thereof,' marking a significant achievement for the institution.

IIIT-Delhi’s patented system employs an advanced design with a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-based wireless communication framework. It shows flexible beamforming capabilities by using a fully functional in-house developed prototype to ensure reliable communication even in non-line-of-sight scenarios.

This technology was successfully represented at the Indian Mobile Congress 2024. The demonstration highlighted RIS-enabled communication systems’ practical viability and applicability in the real world. The credit for this exceptional patent has been awarded to the inventors Dr. Debidas Kundu, Mr. Khagendra Joshi, Mr. Deepak Kumar Sahoo, and Prof. Vivek Ashok Bohara. With their collective efforts, the researchers have contributed to creating smarter radio systems and next-generation communication technologies.

Commenting on this achievement, Prof. Vivek Ashok Bohara (Professor, ECE Department IIIT-Delhi and Dean of Innovation, Research & Development (DIRD)) said, “The patent is a reflection of our strong commitment to advance research in next-generation wireless technologies. Through the development of a practical RIS-based communication system, we aim to showcase our ability to transform theoretical advancements into practical solutions. Since the industry is moving towards 6G and beyond, such innovations are highly crucial to adapt to intelligent and flexible communication environments.”

This milestone positions IIIT-Delhi as a leading research establishment and further strengthens its status as a cluster of excellence in domains such as intelligent radio environments, RIS-assisted communication, and future wireless systems, including 6G, and more.
