JAMMU: The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Sciences, Central University of Jammu, organized a panel discussion on “Drug Discovery: From Bench to Market”, with the objective of strengthening scientific understanding, research orientation, and skill development among students.

The programme was graced by Dr. Ravi Shankar, Principal Scientist, CSIR–Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu, as the distinguished guest speaker. The event was held under the guidance of Dr. Sujata Kundan, Head, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Sciences, Central University of Jammu, and was convened by Dr. Princy Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Sciences.

Dr. Ravi Shankar shared his inspiring academic and professional journey, from his MSc studies to his present role at CSIR–IIIM Jammu. He motivated students to pursue research with dedication and curiosity while elaborating on scientific and natural approaches to drug discovery. Emphasizing the importance of traditional knowledge systems, Dr. Shankar urged students to document medicinal knowledge passed down through generations, particularly the use of medicinal plants.

He stressed that such traditional knowledge must be scientifically validated and preserved to prevent its loss. The panel discussion featured active contributions from research scholars Sakshi and Samridhi, along with MSc students Kritika, Utkarshini, Vanshika and Sameer, who shared their perspectives and engaged in meaningful discussions on various aspects of drug discovery and development.

The event aimed at enhancing presentation skills, refining scientific thinking, and exposing students to emerging research areas. Student speakers highlighted that drug discovery is not merely about molecules, but about addressing real-world problems, describing the field as a powerful opportunity to apply chemical knowledge in the service of humanity by taking research from bench to market.

The session concluded with interactive discussion, leaving participants inspired to explore innovative research pathways and contribute meaningfully to the field of drug discovery. The event ended with a formal vote of thanks presented by Dr. Princy Gupta, departmental coordinator of the program.
