JAMMU: Your silence is deafening and is a crime against humanity, Girdhari Lal Raina tells politicians, civil society members and social leaders of Kashmir. In a statement the Former MLC and spokesperson of BJP Jammu Kashmir Union territory lamented the studied silence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah besides PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti over the rape of a seventy year old widow tourist from Maharashtra. You leave no chance to comment or react to issues unrelated to you or your work, Raina said.
You claim credit for the revival of tourism in Pahalgam but have no time to look into the treatment meted out to those who chose to visit Kashmir for enjoying their holidays. Is this the model of governance you stand by, GL Raina asked Omar Abdullah. Even the call for introspection by the Principal Sessions Judge Anantnag has not stirred the conscience of the so called conscience-keepers of Kashmir valley Raina regretted.
The Principal Sessions Judge called for introspection on the decay of moral values in the Valley, observing, "No sooner the sheet-anchors, conscious keepers, watch dogs, and philanthropists of this society will rise to the occasion to check what is going wrong on the moral front of the society, the better will be for saving Kashmir as the paradise on earth in its true sense."
Calling the victim a “revered guest” in the “land of saints and seers,” the court lamented that she was treated so “shabbily and shockingly” that she would live with remorse for having chosen Kashmir as her holiday destination. “The alleged incident is highly unfortunate, condemnable by all possible words, and ought to have jolted the conscience of this society — which claims its moorings to be based on rich ethical values and culture — but now stands shaken to the hilt.”
The court said the case was not an isolated act, but rather a chilling symptom of the broader moral collapse in the region , GL Raina quoted . He asked the leadership in Kashmir, religious, social, political and civil to come out of its self righteousness mode and confront the reality on ground before it becomes too late. The former MLC called for social retribution of culprits for such crimes, besides legal punishment.
