Shahid Ahmed Hakla PoonchiFrom the peaks of the Himalayas to the deserts of Rajasthan, the Gujjar community has always been a steadfast guardian of India’s borders and values. Forged in the crucible of history, the Gujjars are not merely a community—they are the bloodline of warriors who have stood tall against invasions, tyranny, and oppression. Their legacy traces back to none other than Raja Mihir Bhoj, one of the greatest kings of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, who not only defended his kingdom against foreign invaders but also established a reign that stood as a bulwark against the rise of foreign forces in North India. It is said that the Gujjars were his closest allies—fierce in battle, loyal to the end.

This proud lineage of bravery did not fade with time. In 1857, during the First War of Indian Independence, it was the Gujjars who rose with unyielding resolve, striking fear into the heart of the British empire, fighting on the frontlines, and keeping the spirit of rebellion alive when the nation’s freedom seemed distant. From the battlefields of history to the rugged terrains of modern warfare, the Gujjars have always been warriors at the heart of India’s defense.

India’s strength lies in its diversity, and nowhere is this better reflected than in the Indian Army’s regimental structure. The Rajput RegimentSikh RegimentJat RegimentDogra RegimentGorkha RiflesMaratha Light InfantryKumaon Regiment, and Assam Regiment are proud symbols of valor associated with specific communities and regions. Each of these regiments was formed in recognition of their historical bravery, cultural identity, and longstanding contributions to national defense. These regiments have not only preserved martial traditions but have also created a deep sense of belonging and pride among the people they represent.

In the same spirit, the Gujjars—known for their fierce loyalty, rugged endurance, and generations of service in paramilitary forces and the Indian Army—deserve a regiment that reflects their unique warrior legacy. A Gujjar Regiment would not only pay homage to the spirit of Maharaja Mihir Bhoj and countless unsung Gujjar heroes, but also serve as a morale-boosting pillar of inclusion, pride, and inspiration for future generations.

Yet, despite their immense contributions, they remain without recognition—without a regiment to call their own. This is not just a demand; it is a call to action. It is time for India to rise and give its silent sentinels the honor they deserve. A Gujjar Regiment is not just an acknowledgment of the past—it is a bold step toward honoring one of the most resilient and fearless communities that have bled for the soil of this nation.

Historical Contributions of Gujjars in Warfare:

  1. Ancient India – Warriors by Legacy
The Gujjars have a proud martial history dating back to ancient times. They are believed to have been prominent during the reigns of the Gupta and Gurjara-Pratihara dynasties. These warrior clans resisted foreign invasions and defended northern India from multiple aggressions, showcasing bravery on par with any recognized martial race.
  2. First War of Independence, 1857 – The Unyielding Rebels
Gujjars played a pivotal role in the 1857 revolt against the British. In western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and parts of Rajasthan, Gujjar warriors such as Raja Ram of Dadri, the Gujjars of Meerut and Saharanpur, and countless unnamed others took arms against colonial forces. They were labeled as "Hostile Tribes" by the British for a reason—their bravery posed a real threat.
  3. Post-Independence – Loyal Citizens of Conflict Zones
In regions like Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, and Kupwara, Gujjars have served as the eyes and ears of the Indian Army. As hill guides, informants, and local protectors, they have facilitated military operations in hostile environments. Many have laid down their lives in the line of duty without wearing a uniform.

In 1947 at the time of Tribal attacks and during the wars with Pakistan in 1965 & 1971 the Gujjars and Bakerwals of the State defended the country and repulsed every enemy attack by working shoulder to shoulder with army.
During the Indo-Pak battles Gujjars excelled in bravery and courage and their role and sacrifice was not less that other martial races of the country. In 1965 when intruders indulged in destruction, the credit goes to the Gujjars and Bakerwals who gave the first information of their presence in the Valley, he added. There is sizeable population of Gujjars and Bakerwals along the Line of Actual Control of both the countries but in each sector viz. Gureze, Titwal,Uri,Poonch, Mendhar Rajouri, Bandi Chechian, Chhamb, Jorian and Sialkot Gujjars of this side stood face to face in front of enemy, guided and helped Indian Army.

Gujjars in 1965 in Dhalbarot and Mendhar informed army and police about the presence of intruders while they were crossing Pir Panchal pass without caring for their lives & the Gujjars assisted Indian army during the crisis under its towering leaders to repulse Pak attacks. In 1989-90 when militancy was on peak Gujjars performed heroic deeds and took a front against the terrorists. Many of the community members lost their lives but they stood as a rock for national cause.

Why a Gujjar Regiment is Justified:

  1. Martial Culture and Warrior Ethos
The Gujjar community's way of life in the hills and forests is disciplined, rugged, and shaped by survival. These are ideal characteristics for a soldier. Their natural endurance, familiarity with difficult terrain, and communal strength make them ready-made warriors.
  2. Borderline Residency and National Security
Gujjars in J&K and Himachal live along international borders. Their presence in conflict-prone zones like LOC and LAC positions them strategically as the first line of defense. A dedicated regiment would channel this proximity and patriotism into organized military might.
  3. Existing Precedent of Community-Based Regiments
India has honored martial communities like Rajputs, Jats, Sikhs, Gorkhas, Dogras, and Marathas with regiments of their own. It is both logical and fair to extend this tradition to the Gujjars—who have demonstrated similar valor over centuries.
  4. Boosting Morale and National Integration
Creating a Gujjar Regiment would instill immense pride and motivation among Gujjar youth, encouraging them to serve with more zeal. It would also send a strong message of inclusion and unity, especially to the minorities and tribal communities in border states.
  5. Empowerment through Representation
A regiment dedicated to Gujjars would not only acknowledge their historical service but also offer a structured path for upliftment, reducing alienation and helping integrate them more deeply into the national mainstream.

Gujjar Regiment: A Strategic and Symbolic Win

The establishment of a Gujjar Regiment is not just a military move—it is a symbolic recognition of loyalty, courage, and contribution. It would be a fitting tribute to those who have served in silence, those who have died unknown, and those who still guard the borders as unsung heroes. It is a moment to honor the bloodline of warriors and bring them into the fold as equals among India’s most elite forces.

Some Notable Gujjar Figures:

1-     Late Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (Bharat Ratna) - While Sardar Patel is widely known for his role in India’s independence and as the Iron Man of India, his roots are deeply connected to the Gujjar community of Gujarat. His determination and leadership in integrating the princely states into the Indian Union were critical to the unification of India.

2-     Late Major Somnath Sharma ( Param Vir Chakra )- Major Somnath Sharma, a hero of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, became the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honor, for his gallant actions during the Battle of Badgam in Kashmir. Despite being severely outnumbered, he held his position and fought to the last man, his courage playing a pivotal role in securing the region for India.

3-     Late Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla Poonchi : A prominent Gujjar leader from Poonch, Choudhary Wazir Mohd Hakla dedicated his life to the welfare of the Gujjar-Bakarwal community. He contributed significantly during the 1965 and 1971 wars, supporting the Indian Army and promoting communal harmony. To honor his services, the Government of India released a postal stamp in his name in 2024, and the J&K government named roads and institutions after him.

4-     Late Mohd. Din (Padma Shri Awardee): A member of the Muslim Gujjar community from Kashmir, Mohd. Din was awarded the Padma Shri in 1966 for his bravery. In 1965, he helped the Indian Army by informing authorities about Pakistani infiltrators in the Gulmarg region, preventing a potential threat. Despite being targeted by Pakistani terrorists in 1990 for his pro-India stance, he remained a symbol of courage.

5-     Late Maulvi Ghulam Din (Ashok Chakra Awardee): A member of the Muslim Gujjar community from Poonch, Ghulam Din played a key role during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. Despite the infiltrators' attempt to gain local support, he motivated villagers to resist and provided vital intelligence to the Indian Army, earning him the Ashok Chakra in 1966.

6-     Late Mian Bashir Ahmed Larvi (Padma Bhushan Awardee): A prominent Gujjar leader from Kashmir, Mian Bashir Ahmed was a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and worked relentlessly for the welfare of the Gujjar-Bakarwal community. He promoted national integration and loyalty towards India, earning him the Padma Bhushan in 2007 for his contributions to the nation.

7-     Late Smt. Mali (Padma Shri Awardee): During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Smt. Mali, a Gujjar woman from Poonch, saved the district from Pakistani infiltration. Despite the harsh conditions and language barriers, her quick thinking and bravery led to the capture of Pakistani soldiers, saving countless lives. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 for her extraordinary courage.

8-     Late Gujjar Singh Bhakna: A member of the Ghadar Party, Gujjar Singh Bhakna was an influential figure in the Indian independence movement. He participated in revolutionary activities and faced imprisonment for his role in the Ghadar conspiracy. His contributions to the struggle for freedom were recognized with the Tamar Patra in 1972.

The call for a Gujjar Regiment is not just a plea rooted in emotion—it is a rightful demand anchored in history, patriotism, and proven valor. From ancient dynasties to modern conflicts, the Gujjars have demonstrated unwavering courage, loyalty, and sacrifice in defense of India. They have fought without asking for recognition, lived in the harshest terrains without complaint, and bled for the nation without a uniform to honor their contribution. It is now time for the country to rise to its moral obligation and acknowledge this silent yet steadfast force.

Instituting a Gujjar Regiment will not only be a tribute to their heroic past but a visionary step toward inclusive national defense. It will empower future generations of Gujjar youth, foster deeper national integration, and fortify India’s borders with a regiment raised from among those who have always been its unsung protectors. Let this not be a forgotten chapter in history—let it be the beginning of a new legacy, where the Gujjars are no longer just the guardians of the land but also the proud bearers of a regiment that carries their name and honors their soul.
