ANANTNAG: In a compassionate gesture towards the victims of human-wildlife conflict, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Pahalgam, M Altaf Kaloo, today distributed ex-gratia relief cheques at Townhall Aishmuqam.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Kaloo emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive and strategic plan to mitigate rising incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the region. “While the ex-gratia relief provides temporary support to the victims, our main focus should be on preventing such incidents from occurring in the first place,” he said.
On the occasion, DFO gave a detailed presentation highlighting the department's ongoing efforts, achievements, and future strategies aimed at minimizing human-wildlife conflicts and ensuring safety for both communities and wildlife.
Later, MLA also chaired the consultative meeting on the management of Overa -Aru Wildlife Sanctuary, besides, inferred that he saw first time a detailed and scientific plan for Overa-Aru WLS for 10 years from 2025- 2035, also detailed DPR for Mini Zoo Pahalgam was appreciated.
The initiative was appreciated by the victims, who expressed hope for more proactive measures and increased community engagement in wildlife management. DFO Wildlife Protection South along with concerned Wildlife Rangers, field staff, human-wildlife victims and civil society members were present on the occasion.
KULGAM: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, conducted an extensive tour of several areas of Damhal Hanjipora (DH Pora) Constituency and had on the spot assessment of public issues and development needs in these areas. During the tour, Sakeena visited several villages and hamlets and held interaction with the local residents, Mohalla community members and representatives.
The Minister, during the interactions, attentively listened to the concerns of people regarding healthcare, road connectivity, power supply, water supply and other day to day issues requiring urgent attention of the government.
Addressing the locals at various locations, Sakeena highlighted that the present government is formed by the vote and trust of people and therefore the Ministers are continuously on the ground to listen to the people’s issues, reflecting commitment of Omar Abdullah led government to grassroots governance. She added that the public service is core objective of the present government.
“Presence and responsiveness to public issues and concerns is main motto of this government”, Sakeena stated. While responding to the issues and grievances of local populace, Sakeena assured them that these would be addressed promptly.
KUPWARA: In a strong warning to Pakistan over its support to terrorist groups targeting India, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today said that there is nothing in the neighbouring country that is beyond the reach of the Indian Armed Forces. “The whole world has seen the bravery of the Indian Armed Forces and then enemy started pleading all over the world for ceasefire. There is nothing in Pakistan that is beyond the reach of the Indian Army,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
In his address to the army personnel deployed across the LoC in Tangdhar Sector, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted India's global stature. He also pointed out that the enemy was destroying humanity on the strength of debt.
“Our neighbour is bent on destroying humanity on the strength of debt. I think they must have learnt a lesson from the reply given by our brave soldiers. I salute your valour, bravery and devotion towards Maa Bharti and pray to God that whenever such a crisis comes, the people should know that our country is in the safe hands of heroes like you,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
The Lieutenant Governor also reviewed security situation on the ground with army and police officials. He said the country is grateful to our Armed Forces for protecting the lives and ensuring the sanctity of our borders with alertness, dedication, bravery and supreme sacrifice. “I am confident that our Jawans will firmly deal with any misadventure by the enemy,” the Lieutenant Governor added.
KUPWARA: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha today visited Kupwara and took assessment of the damage caused by recent unprovoked heavy shelling by Pakistan. At the border areas of the Tangdhar Sector, the Lieutenant Governor interacted with local residents and assured them of all assistance and support by the administration. He said, the administration is working on a comprehensive plan to seek centre's help to rehabilitate residents affected by Pakistan’s shelling.
While reviewing the relief and rehabilitation measures taken by the Administration, the Lieutenant Governor was briefed by Shri Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Ms Ayushi Sudan, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara about the ongoing appraisal of requirements and construction of bunkers through Gram Sabhas. The Lieutenant Governor directed the District Administration to expedite the construction of bunkers to ensure the safety of border residents.
“Based on the administration's assessment, immediate assistance has been provided. But I think this help is not enough. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and senior officers will jointly prepare a comprehensive plan for the damage caused and proper rehabilitation of the affected families. It is our collective responsibility to ensure their safety and rehabilitation,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
The Lieutenant Governor further directed for ensuring adequate supply of essential services in the affected areas. He also lauded the coordinated efforts of the Administration, Army, Police, and other organizations involved in relief and rehabilitation work.
SRINAGAR: The drinking water supplied across the Union Territory is safe for consumption with its regular monitoring under a robust and transparent mechanism. A comprehensive water quality monitoring and surveillance system has been established in J&K, comprising a network of 02 Union Territory level and 20 district level NABL accredited labs besides 76 Sub-divisional level testing facilities.
During the financial year 2024–25, a total of 2.66 lakh water quality tests were conducted covering 6,122 villages in J&K. Out of these, only 78 samples were found to be contaminated, primarily due to turbidity, which is a temporary and seasonal phenomenon usually occurring during heavy rains. Immediate remedial measures were taken in 76 of these cases, resulting in a 98% rate of corrective action, which stands significantly higher than the national average of 62%. Moreover, the contamination rate of 0.03% in J&K is notably lower than the national contamination average of 4.1%, showcasing the UT’s better performance in ensuring water safety.
It is also pertinent to mention that during the ongoing financial year 2025–26, around 25,000 samples have already been tested, so far, and not a single case of contamination has been reported. These figures reflect the seriousness with which the department treats water safety.
The Department of Jal Shakti remains fully committed towards providing safe and clean drinking water to every household in Jammu & Kashmir. Any sporadic issue like those arising due to turbidity are being swiftly addressed through a well established protocol. The Department assures that the water supply in the UT is safe, routinely tested and among the best performing in the country in terms of quality assurance and responsiveness.
